Create a Group of Shapes to be Used as a Base of the Illustration

now everything is ready to start tracing the sketch here, tracing means interpreting your sketch into a group of shapes. Let's focus on the bigger shapes that you can see. So using the zoom tool, I'll make sure zoom in enough to see different shapes clearly. In some cases you don't actually see a clear shape and that's where you use your interpretation. one tip for this process is that it is easier to set no fuel and have a reasonably thick line in bright color. So instead of black line I will choose magenta as a line color and use a property panel. I choose the stroke too rather thick stroke size that way it's easier to see against the pencil sketch in the background and it's and it is easy to see the progress of tracing. So once again I will start something big, for example what you can see here and a lot of it is a symmetry design. So I'm going to start working on behalf of the shape and I am combining different shapes to get a result that I want and now I'm going to use a pathfinde...

r divide, then I can use my direct selection tool to get rid of the area that I don't need for the middle area. I'm going to rotate this Rectangle to 45° and use the pathfinder minus front again use the pathfinder divide to get the results, this has some curve. So I need to combine few other shapes here, I'll start with round rectangle tool and I just corner radius and also I combined with normal rectangle, then use pathfinder divide again and here this particular shape is divided into a few other shapes. So I'm going to use pathfinder unite to make it into one shape. Now I created a half of the eyeglass area, I can select these using the reflect tool and create the mirror image and once again, if I need to connect the shape, I can use the pathfinder, unite even simple shape like this arrow shape can be created with combining different shapes. So this will be the rectangle area and I will make square shaped by holding down shift key, Rotate 45° in using delete anchor point tool to make this square into a triangle and again combining these two shapes to create an arrow shape. And whenever you see the similar shape could be just a copy and paste in this case, rotate and resize as you can see the first step of tracing, you want to focus on working on the focal point of the design, which means bigger shapes in the design. Again, remember you want to leave all the details, small parts for now this way you can keep paying attention to more important part of the design and later on the focal point in the hierarchy of the design will be much more clear as you go. So I see some details, shapes in here, but I'm going to leave that for now and move on to other areas. So you look for the key shapes that's really important for the design in focusing on that. And also at this point, go to view menu and show the rulers and to set the center line will be really helpful for this node shape. It will be this rectangle in combined with round corner rectangle. But in this case using the direct selection tool to select the bottom of the shape and hit the delete key to get rid of that portion. Now, using the direct selection tool, select the bottom two points in command J. For joint. And I will resize this shape and adjust the shape and use path find that unite to create the shape of the nose. And I will focus on creating or producing lots of shapes first. And we can go back and fine tune the actual position, actual size and all that later. So it's important to work on the bigger shapes first. So therefore, I am working on the body area and again, I am just combining different shapes and edit the shape and combine the shapes. Once the half of the design is done, then I can reflect that image to the other side to get a mirror image Pathfinder United function To combine the two shapes. So this part of the process is to look for the shape that you can use if you don't see the clear shape, then still you can combine multiple shapes to achieve the look of the design. And we will repeat this process until you trace overall design.
