Shoot: Incorporate Ring Light
Hero and Tethys, come on in! And I'm actually gonna use Mom as an assistant. I've set up a few things. I talked about this a little bit earlier, but didn't shoot with it. Yeah, it's very bright. This is called MyRingLight.com. (laughter) I know, it kinda feels like you're at the dentist, doesn't it, it's so bright. It's just a very simple, constant light source that adds that five or ten percent of something different, so like I'm still gonna shoot all these more classic group, relational posing, but then I said, oh bring some accessories, fun hats, something fun that I, these are just up close shots that have a totally different look than what we already did. And what I love about this, this bends. I was able to fly with this in my suitcase. And also, I use this all the time as just an extra light source. Like I'm shooting product shots and I'll use it to just kick in some extra light from the side. I don't even always use it as a ring light. But like I say, I call it more like the sa...
lt and pepper because it's something like, just a little bit, like I wouldn't overdo it. It is a ring light, so it adds some different catch lights and a different look, but it's fun. The other thing that we're gonna use that again I just use that little bit, this is a leaf blower. I don't know if they make this one anymore, I've had this a long time, but again, can fly in a suitcase, rechargeable. I can literally shoot and blow somebody's hair at the same time. Very directional, which is nice. I'm gonna have Mom help me, so when I talk about the scenarios of it's great to use mom and dad, whether they're getting the kids to look and smile, hold a reflector, blow the hair. I mean, actually this works well. I love doing this with mom and senior girl. There's just a fun dynamic there. It's like, Mom, hair, you know, and they're like laughing and having fun. So, let's go head and do this. I just switched lenses. I mean, this is, like I said, this is pretty tight, pretty close. And let's just, let's do this! So, who wants to go first? We're just gonna get one of you guys at a time. Tethys, right? Awesome. So, I will definitely do the hair blowing at the end. We'll do a couple shots at the beginning. So, I haven't even shot this yet, so we'll kinda see how it's set up. Tethys, I'm gonna bring you up here. Can you just stand, my sweet girl? What?! Look at that. So it's crazy bright, isn't it? Oh my goodness gracious. Give me a second. I'm gonna peak through this for a minute. Change a couple things. Change the white balance. Let's look. Alright, my girl. Let me just peek. We're gonna do a couple shots here. Perfect. Hold on. So cute, so cute. And I tend to actually like to overexpose these a teeny bit. So Tethys, can you actually go with your quiet smile. Shhh. Right there. And I actually just switched to honestly, onto aperture priority just 'cause I know I'm taking a couple quick shots and then we're gonna go right back to this. What?! Okay, so, now what we're gonna do, can you stand nice and tall? Can you do a little sassy? Can you put your hands on your hips? Stand nice and tall. Tall, tall, tall. I love that jacket, can I have it? No! No? Is that your favorite? Are you missing some teeth? Oh! I love it! I love it. Can you just go real quiet, your quiet smile for me again? Not mad, just relax. A little bit more quiet. Relax. There we go. Perfect. Can you say Miss Vicki has stinky feet? Miss Vicki has stinky feet. What? I have stinky feet? Oh my goodness! Look right here. Perfect. Should Mom blow your hair with the fan? Would that be cute? Would you want that or no? No?! Can we try it? Oh, can we try it? Don't you smile at me. Don't you smile! Don't you dare! Oh my goodness. There, stand up tall and freeze! Perfect. So this is, like I said, a constant light source too so we're not freezing motion with this, so I have to be a little more careful with that as I do with window light depending what I'm shooting at 'cause there's movement in things. But let me, actually get the two girls. I think I can get the two girls together with this. So come on Miss Hero. No, let's keep you both together. So these are definitely still gonna be more up close, just 'cause the lighting -- I know, it's so bright! It seems like the dentist, but it's not. You guys are good. Can you wrap your arms around each other in the front too? And then real quiet, wait, wait, shh. Gentle, gentle. And then, can you make your heads touch? Perfect. Looking right at me. Oh! Let's not lose your cute hat. I love that! Go real quiet. Perfect. And then, oop, wait, hold on. That got a little bit overexposed here, guys. You know what I'm gonna do? I'm just gonna actually get a meter reading that makes a little more sense to me. I was, oop, right here... Got it? You got it? Okay. Then we can just not worry about it. So this would be an example, I was just kinda tryin' to be quick and cheat. What that's gonna do in editing, Jed will get mad at me, it's like oh my gosh, overexposed. You know, it just was like, all over the place, versus why not just get the exposure and get it right? Easy enough to do. Here, sorry little pumpkin. There we go. Did I just call you a pumpkin? I don't know why I did that. (laughs) Do you have any nicknames? Robot. Robot? Robot. T-dot. T-dot? And put that up a little bit more. Okay, let's do this guys, so I'm gonna do ISO at one twenty-fifth of a second at F4. Maybe I'll go up to ISO500, one twenty-fifth, F4. Okay. Let's try that. So, any of those numbers mean anything to you guys? No. No. I know. Hold on, I gotta get that all set up. (yell) And then, let's go your quiet smiles again. Shh. Go qui -- Oh, you guys are silly. You're so silly. One, two, three, freeze! Do you ever play the freeze game? And, hold on, and Tethys, let's do this, let's put your ears, can you glue your ears actually together? Make your heads touch. To each other. So don't get in front of each other. Actually put your heads side by side and make your ears-- Let me, hold it. Relax your shoulders. Here we go. Mom? Are you right here? I'm gonna have you come help. I use mom as fashion police all the time. So I'm gonna focus on the camera, but the hair and the hat are gonna bug you, I think, the way it got mooshed around, yup. So I'd rather, again, fix that now, than keep shooting. We can fix it in Photoshop, but rather get it right in camera. It's slipping again. Okay, aww, we're gonna do one a little, real still on this one guys. And we'll do some more fun ones, I promise. Aww, I love that. Quiet, smiley. Perfect. Perfect. Thank you. Okay. Miss Tethys, you're gonna take a little break. Let me get a couple just of Hero so it matches. Ooh, I love your scarf! That's so cute! I love that. Can you try a quiet smile? Shh. And you know, sometimes, I love to tell people this is like a photo booth, so I'll sometimes be like, let's go through this, do something fun, make a face. Can you put your hands on your head or on your hat, Hero? Oh, I like that. Peekaboo. (laughter) Can you put your hands on your head? Aww! Cute! Can you put your hands on your hip? Aww, love that! Can you go serious and sassy? Mad? Do you have a mad face? (growls) How 'bout a surprised face? How 'bout if Mom was gonna come tickle you face? Let's actually get that leaf blower. Let's show you guys how this works. And so, I'll hold it for one second just to show you how, it's a little tricky. This is where a camera stand would come in handy, but I can do it. So if I needed to, if I didn't have Mom in here to help me, the key is, and what I would tell Mom, is to just blow the hair at the bottom of the hair around the neck is what's pretty when that starts to blow. You don't have to blow it on their face, dry out their eyes, you can just focus right here. So, where's Hero? I wanna see your ha-- This'll be what, okay, okay, this feels good. Are you hot? Feel how good, that's like an air conditioner. Isn't that awesome? I told you that's awesome. I love that. Perfect. And so, we get some fun. Let's bring all your hair forward so then we can really catch it. There you go. And you're gonna look right at me. Perfect! And you know what, there's a couple pieces of hair on her bangs to grab real quick. Yep. Here I go. And then, we'll just do a couple more and then we're gonna-- Perfect, right there! Whoa! Oh my goodness! Oh, there's that one. Yeah, I'm gonna have Mom help me. You'll do a better job. So, right there, but it is possible to do. Let's bring the hair forward one more time. We'll do one more, sweetie. Okay. Those are gonna be so cute. One, two, three. (growl of leaf blower) Like you're cold in the wind. Hold your scarf with your hands. Oh! Cute! Oh, so cute. And go serious for one. Oh. Oh. Here, look off to the side. Look off to the side. Cute. That was cute. You guys get the idea. I wanna go back to some group posing, but just like I said, a really fun, quick way to change up. It's good. We're good.

All I have to say is - Vicki you are a saint. To handle four kids, dog and their parents too, not to mention a class of students watching...AND YOU'RE TAKING PHOTOS, GOOD ONES!! All I know is, I could not handle that as you have even though I was a teacher for 25 years (K-12, all of them) - and wonderful people like you are far and few between. May you stay healthy and happy and continue interacting with kids and parents - you really have a talent! (I had to turn the sound off on the vid because it was driving me crazy,, with kids, dog, etc etc!)

It was true to life and yes, a bit chaotic. But I enjoyed it, it shows the work that often does go into a session with all the multitasking. I got some great ideas for poses, and learned some new way to interact with younger children. Thank you for a honest session and not a perfect planned one.

Awesome class, really informative, and loved how you handled all the chaos. Great sales and promotional advice from your hubby too. Fantastic, well rounded :)
