Tips & Tricks For Family Group Posing
You guys saw some of this. Some of the things I would do is saying, like, that reverse psychology of not smiling. Using feather dusters, squeakers. One of the things I haven't brought out but I have in the picture, this was (laughing) I always feel so ridiculous and this actually flew in a suitcase with my in-laws when they came to watch our kids, and they were like, can we fly with a leaf blower on a carry-on? But this literally is a cordless leaf blower that you saw me kind of working with that feather duster when I don't have an assistant and I'm just trying to get a little more interaction. This is also how I would, like, blow somebody's hair while I'm shooting. (audience laughing) I know. We, I don't know if we'll do that this morning. That might be a better one to do in the segment this afternoon. But I do use that quite a bit. Again, that's for that 10%, not the 90%. But especially with shots with women or mom and daughters, you can get some beautiful images with that. And havin...
g the clients assist you, I did do that a little bit with Dad, having him jump in and kind of interact. Or just then, when I was like, okay, you guys tickle her. I'm like, pkay, Dad's gonna tickle you. She wasn't really warming up to me a lot. Like, she really wasn't. So I was trying to be a little more hands-off and having Mom and Dad do some of that rather than me. And then, really, it's about having fun. It's about trying to have fun and then your clients will mimic that with the fun in their images. So, then all I wanted to share is a couple things as, with our vendor list and gear. So, some of the main people we use, White House Custom Color is our lab, that's where we get all of our products and things that we'll be talking about throughout the day. We sell online, Pixieset when we do do that, but prefer for our normal portrait sessions to do in-studio sales, and we'll do that with ProSelect. So we do do both. We do have online sales with Pixieset, and our in-studio sales, which I prefer, with ProSelect. And then for our slideshows and things that we create for our clients, we'll use Animoto. And then the gear that I use, I already talked about, but Spider Holster, I love it. If you have any sort of issues going on in your shoulders, I highly recommend it, totally worth it. I've always been a Canon girl, so I've got the Canon 5D Mark III. And I talked about some of the lenses, but I'll just reiterate. Mostly it's the 70-200 I'll shoot with my sessions, especially outdoors, otherwise the 85 1.2 or the 50 1.2. And then there's the Larson softboxes and reflectors from Sweetlight. As well as, I use Photogenic strobes with that, but we'll be using ProPhoto today, which is great as well. And then just a couple little things that I have in my camera bag, that I use selectively when it's necessary, that I love, is the Westcott Luna Grip that is just, attaches with my Speedlite and it's a little portable softbox, not really something I was thinking I was gonna need, you know, in these sessions we're shooting, but again, it's that 10%. So like, this would be an example of shooting a studio session in a home, and how I would shoot that. And so actually, this image, I have, the Luna Grip is actually the background and kind of creating some flare behind her. And then I have actually my three by four softbox is what was lighting her face in that shot.

All I have to say is - Vicki you are a saint. To handle four kids, dog and their parents too, not to mention a class of students watching...AND YOU'RE TAKING PHOTOS, GOOD ONES!! All I know is, I could not handle that as you have even though I was a teacher for 25 years (K-12, all of them) - and wonderful people like you are far and few between. May you stay healthy and happy and continue interacting with kids and parents - you really have a talent! (I had to turn the sound off on the vid because it was driving me crazy,, with kids, dog, etc etc!)

It was true to life and yes, a bit chaotic. But I enjoyed it, it shows the work that often does go into a session with all the multitasking. I got some great ideas for poses, and learned some new way to interact with younger children. Thank you for a honest session and not a perfect planned one.

Awesome class, really informative, and loved how you handled all the chaos. Great sales and promotional advice from your hubby too. Fantastic, well rounded :)
