Introduction to Automation

Hi. In this video, I'm gonna show you how to use automation in logic pro for when you're mixing this project that I've taken on from Thomas, he already has some volume automation on one or two of the tracks, which is actually using as a gating mechanism. So that when Peter isn't singing, there's no noise and then the volume goes back to normal when he does sing. Thomas has programmed that in manually using volume automation, which I actually bypassed earlier. So what I'm gonna do now is re enable the automation and I'm going to bypass my noise gate in the meantime, because I feel that I've replaced the need for Thomas's automation with the noise gate that I've already got my chain. So let's actually have a listen to what he's done. So I'm just gonna solo the track here and just keep an eye on this Vada here. We'll keep an eye on it down here as well and you'll see it automating for the briefest, the moments I feel like I'm flying. So it was silent until Peter started singing if we bypa...

ss the automation now with the noise gates off for the brief is OK. So you can hear that noise in the background there. So what I'm gonna do is re enable my noise gate for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying, which is basically replaced what Thomas did with the volume automation. So knowing that I'm going to open up automation by pressing a on my keyboard, you can also click this icon up here. And as you can see this is the data that Thomas wrote in to do that automation. And what I'm gonna do is go to the point at all up here. My secondary point at all, select auto operation selector. Can I hold to command and drag over like this and then just press delete on my keyboard that deletes all of those nodes there. And I'm going to just click on that note here. OK? So I've deleted those nodes that Thomas wrote in. What I'm gonna do is replace them with some of my own ones. I'm gonna click here. Click here, click here and here these are nodes you need nodes in order to write in some automation data. And what I'm gonna do then is as well hold the command key to select those nodes. And I'm going to pull them down to zero DB. What I could have done also earlier is select all of the nodes across the track and deleted all of them and started my own automation data as well. But from here, I'm just continuing where Thomas left off. So I've just drawn in some automation here just so that the fader isn't at plus six just to give me headroom to turn it up if I want to. And then what I'm gonna do is re enable the automation. So click over here. Now, lets have a listen for the briefest, the moments I feel like I'm flying. So obviously, the bit that we just listened to the fader was always at zero. If I started from just before where the fader goes from plus six, which is where Thomas left it up there down to zero my hair. You see that fader move ever so slightly at the beginning my hair. OK. So what I'm gonna do is actually create another note here and bring it out to plus six. So it's still the same volume that Thomas left it at uh just before this bit, but I wanted to automate this section down when he sings. Oh My hair just now for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying. So I just wanted that bit to be a bit quieter. Um What I'm actually gonna do is zoom out a bit. OK. So because I really wanna work with some of the automation that Thomas has got here, but I really want some headroom to push the fader up if I want to. So what I'm gonna do is hold the commands key, bring my cursor over here and click and hold, drag a box. That's all of the automation data there. And I'm gonna come over to this trim dial here and trim them all down by 60 B just so that I've got headroom above here to push the volume up if I want to. And then I'm gonna zoom in zoom in the pit more. And then I'm just going to listen to the relative differences between these two parts here. So I'm just gonna drag this cycle range here and extend the end of it just to listen to what that dynamic sounds like between what he sings here and what he sings here. The wind rushes past my face and through my hair for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying. OK. So there's a dynamic there now which I've created artificially with volume automation, but the dynamic is a bit too large now. So I'm just gonna select these nodes here using my select tool again, command and click and drag around the nodes that I want to move and I'm gonna pull them up like this. So just minus two relative to zero here, the wind rushes past my face and through my hair and I'm gonna extend this ramp here just to make it slightly less noticeable. The wind rushes past my face and through my hair for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying. OK, still a little bit too quiet, but I haven't actually listened to it in the mix yet. So I'll do one more adjustment. The wind rushes past my face and through my hair for the briefest. The moments I feel like I'm flying now. Let's listen to see if that gets lost in the mix at all. So unso of this track just f OK. So overall, the track is quiet now because I turned down all of the automation before. So what I'm actually gonna do is come over to my channel strip here and this gain stage that I've got loaded at the end of my chain here just before the chorus. I'm just gonna turn it up by six B to compensate for the 60 B drop in automation values that I did earlier. That's fine. Just close that rushes past my face and through my hair for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying. I'm just gonna doll it down a bit more actually just past my face and through my, for the briefest of moments, I feel like I'm flying. Bring that up ever so slightly. She's passed my face and through my OK. I think actually I'm going to pull this one along a bit here. Create another note here and just pull this one down. Just a drop, this lyric here in volume ever so slightly but not quite as much as the one after it just past my face and threw me for the briefest of moments. I feel like I'm flying. Great. So that's working quite nicely for me. So what I did was following on from what Thomas George already did. I replace some of his automation just by using a noise gate. So I didn't have to rely on the fader automation to drop the noise when I don't wanna hear it. And then I modified some of the data by selecting all of it and then turning a lot of it down cos I didn't wanna work from plus six. I wanted to, if I need to turn up the volume at certain parts and if it's already at plus six, the maximum value I can't do that. So I selected all of them using the select tool. So pull down from the secondary point at all here, command select and then adjust. And then I wrote in some of my own volume data to control the dynamics of the vocal in a way that I feel is helpful for the mix. Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video.
