Tips to Start a Mix
Hi. In this video, we're gonna talk about how to start mixing and mixing best practices. So a few tips that I've got for you in terms of how to get started mixing and how to start confidently mixing your own tracks or other people's tracks is keep it simple when you start mixing, try just mixing first. And what I mean by that is try balancing everything first, get your gain staging down and adjust the faders and just focus on balance. Try not to get too distracted at first and try not to dive in too deep to any single element in the mix. Cos when you're mixing, you're trying to make everything work together. You're not trying to make one thing as good as it possibly can. You're trying to stay in context and you're trying to make the entire product sound good because that's just what mixing it's no different to cooking or baking. The quality of the product is predicated on how well balanced the ingredients are. So assume the simplest path to the goal and know what the goal is. Try and v...
isualize the type of mix that you're going for and just keep it simple. So I suggest that you just start with gain staging and then you just work on balance. So just work the faders, make sure you give yourself loads of headroom to begin with at first and just work the pan pots until you find a good balance. And then from there, things will start to become obvious. The problems that you need to solve will start to become apparent. Things like EQ and compression, especially compression because as you try and balance, you'll find that dynamic inconsistencies in some of the tracks make it really difficult to balance because they're moving up and down in volume. So like I said, go for balance first, go for staging first. Think about where you want things to appear in the sound stage. Do you want some things to the left? Some things to the right, some things to the back and some things forward, visualize the goal and keep it simple. Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video.
