Organizing Memorabilia

Please welcome back to creative life making against you now this has been such an exciting day was this much fun for you as it was for all of us? It wass thank you have you ever had such an enthusiastic bunch of ladies working? I have I have had is because you guys are so in line with the enthusiastic audience that I'm used to and I was just actually telling them right before we started this morning that that I was depending on them and they didn't know that because I just really I knew that I was going to feed off your energy if you had it and you have it and I'm grateful for that so it's been their fantastic happy fantastic the charges have been great was so excited to get going with two souls that you take it away okay, thank you so much I cannot think of a better way to start the day than toe have ah ha moments I didn't know they were going to ask you guys that and that so lifting for me to hear what's really resonating with you guys and what's what's clicking because it's going to...

be different for each of us jean marie, where there any other people in the internet audience who had other ah ha moments not that I need more of a boost but what's really knee is as I was listening to them I was I was kind of having my own ah ha! Moments again of that is important. Let's get that album off the top of the closet. And it is important an organization not just in scrap booking, but in my life to make sure that I really do bring things together and categorize before I containerized. You know, I just I appreciate the reminder. So what else are we hearing about? I have so many, but these are the ones that I have time to pull. Deb breedlove says her ah ha moment was clearing the clutter, making a space that I love. She just stripped the bulletin board on her scrapbook wall and is redoing it today. Project lifestyle took a put pick and as actually gonna put the before and after on her block this afternoon night, laura says she liked how you said she doesn't that you don't plan the horizontal and vertical pictures. It just makes it so much simpler. And lisa marie says she loves the freedom to make it her own. Insert the page with memories as she desires and as she creates awesome. So I mean, it just stuff like that just keeps coming in. Thanks for sharing that yeah and that's another thing that I'm just living so much is that we do have a lot of scrap bookers who are watching but we do have the non stop occurs or the novices who this is a new concept for them not not project life even but scrapbooking actually doing something with pictures so this is such a thrill tio know that it's really affecting people's mentality about how to approach memory keeping so we're going to dive in its day too segment five my voice is hanging on for dear life and I'm excited about this segment because we're really addressing something very specific but extremely important when it comes to scrap booking a memory keeping and that is what do we do with all that stuff is of odd size it's not standard and I've emphasized how important it is tio stick without four by six if you can if you're going back to old pictures or you're printing current pictures for my six four by six four by six why just because it's so easy it's attainable you khun batch print a whole bunch of four by six you don't have to worry about switching the sizes and re sizing and whatnot and so I stand by that I'm going to keep on encouraging that four by six is where it's at it's just easy it's simple it's going to help you get it done but we do have situations in scrapbooking that are odd size that aren't four by six, and I'm talking about things that are not just your memorabilia and the obvious things. They're all sorts of sizes, but pictures some of us are lucky enough to have inherited pictures or to have pictures from our past that are odd size is I'm not going to go through all the odd sizes, but there's a time in fact, I'll share just a quick experience I had not too long ago earlier this year, our company's cons set me thinking what's the next what? What more should we do? What more can we do to help people have an easier experience with putting their memories together? And we really wanted to explore this idea of doing page protectors divided photo pocket pages that were fit for those odd size photos. So true to what ideo listening to my audience, I threw a message out there on my block and through social media is that guys, I want you to go find the pictures in your house, open up some doors, measure them, get out your ruler and email us tells what size prince you actually have, and I think I figured in my mind this was great research because I wasn't looking at my own stash, I was asking everybody to look at their stashes. And report back and let me know and let's see what we can do from there well what the results were was that I didn't have a few different sizes the list was this long I mean and that surprised me because I have what I have just from what was passed down to me but I don't I really had no clue that so many prints that were that were developed through all these different year all these years different companies and whatever they're all over the place which makes me think even more thank goodness for standardization of the four by six size we have something standard that we all understand what four by six is and what it looks like and how it fits and so that was that was my that was one of my ah ha is ok these sizes are all over the place which as a product designer means ok so I can't really dio photo pocket pages that are three and a half by foreign a quarter because I mean how how specific is that when you think about all these other sizes that are all over the place it just doesn't it doesn't work when you're when you're mass producing all of these products and so so what I had to do is go back to the drawing board of health is this kind of work how do I help people? How do I help myself get these photos into into photo pocket pages really simply and easily and we're going to dig into that and talk about today so when it comes to when it comes to the stuff that we are scrapbooking and that we're thinking about and that we have started her house what are we talking about? What kind of stuff are we talking about and before I really dig into this I would love to ask you guys what comes to mind you're looking at children's art that's really the first thing that comes to a lot of our minds if we're if her parents so what else throughout some other ideas that you think are you know, sitting in your house or that you're familiar with her you've gotten your stash maybe even brought it here yesterday when you were scrapbooking what other stuff that we have the house to fit into scrapbooks what yeah like travels and things yeah maths what else like programs from concerts in school plays and things like yes yeah absolutely ribbons and awards newspaper clippings yeah yeah yeah ticket stubs good. We even talked about ticket stubs yesterday because I think somebody was slipping them into pockets absolutely there's a ton of things that we can put into our scrapbooks there are holiday cards newspaper clippings that we talked about we've got ticket stubs, playbills maps we brought up thank you programs we talked about magazine articles I've pulled several magazine articles over the past here's a big headlines of the world news and things like that bills I'm not saying we want a scrapbook oliver bills but once in a while when you have you know that purchase of an engagement ring or you just think of anything that would be a significant bill or invoice or receipt or things like that platter and calendar pages cookie fortunes menus lists how many you guys air saving your list because I have a habit of just tear amount from away terry because I'm a de clutter, you know and some areas my life some areas I need to work a little better on that but I'm elektronik these days I keep a lot of lists on my on my phone tio however the handwritten lists are we saving those are we throwing them away a little too quickly it's a ballot okay floor plans letters to this with very in santa restaurant coasters, school schedules, clothing tags, scraps and by scraps I mean, you know before you throw something way because it is really like not even donate able but it's trash maybe snap a piece of the fabric if it's a special you know item of clothing from you or your child on going along with that fabric samples, press leaves and flowers foreign money race bibs have any of you guys been in a race I've done it once in my life and that's important thing it's part of our story postcards hotel keys, name tags and name badges autographs boarding passes product packaging food labels food wrappers did you guys remember my starburst you know I was my husband and I were talking about this morning he's like you really like start because he was surprised because he knows that I don't like the sweet stuff I might bring on the chocolate and the pastries and he's like yeah I didn't think that you and I'm like no that's my point I loved it then so I love that I have that starburst rapper it meant something to me is a fifteen year old and now it's different drawings yours or the kids do any of you doodle while you're on the phone or something like that I say those doodles thank you cards and stickers I'm all I'm almost done with my list facebook updates rosters sheet music hospital stuff you know I'm not just a newborn but you know bracelets for maybe other stays report cards school work and school tests invitations and announcements cards from loved ones ribbons we're almost done id cards I hope that your wheels are spinning this is my point award certificates receipts notes and sticky notes on that I have to just mention that reminds me a flashback I'm having right now growing up and even still to this day when I was growing up my my parents home of course my we would exchange notes sometimes some of us a couple of the kids would put sticky notes on the mirror for my mom for example, cause we shared a bathroom and to this day anything how many of us go home? Not all of us do this but the favorites. But there are a couple of us, teo, I still knows that we leave little notes on the mirror for my mom and that's. Just such a fun, sentimental thing for us. And as you guys know, I'm still a fan of the sticky notes for lots of reasons. Special works of art, paint samples, business cards, citations, tickets. Three seats. Okay, this is the last slide of lessing, but I hope your wheels are spinning magnets. Stock reports for sure. His buttons, pens, book parts, cpac it's poses, stamps, text messages. Okay, I'm gonna stuff there you get the point. I want to open your minds to this idea that it isn't just the pictures that tell our story. We have this other stuff. And I think a lot of us avoid putting the stuff in our scrapbooks because why we're not sure how it's going to fit, especially in terms of project life, where it's this very organized, very simplistic pocket system pocket scrapbooking it doesn't seem like the stuff would fit and that's why we've got entire segment today tio address that the bottom line that you want to remember is that memorabilia should be an integral part of a scott book the's are the interesting bits that make up your story that's the bottom line in the main take away I want you to pull and I'm not encouraging you to be a hoarder off stuff for no reason I want you to think about what's what's sentimental what you think means something now I I at the time let's go back to the starburst example just because it's it's clear in my mind I wasn't saving that because I I saw in twenty years it would be special I was a kid you know I just put it in there because it was of interest to me so there's a couple different trains of thought when you're actually going through and saving memorabilia and things like that for your scrapbook sometimes it's because it means something to you right in the moment and it's fun and want to keep it and sometimes you really do need tio what we talked about yesterday begin with the end in mind save something because you know that within ten, twenty, eighty eight years it will be valuable to you or to someone else for some reason so it may not be a big deal to you to keep your old check books that you don't even need for tax purposes anymore but what if he just tore out one carbon copy of one of those checks to show what you know it's different than it was forty years ago and it's going to be different and forty years from now, those types of things that you want to think historically and and also sentimentally what might mean something to you or someone else later? So those are the type of things that I want you to think about as you're saving stuff another thing is that when it comes tio memories sorry guys are fighting this called fighting it so hard is that the memorabilia and the physical objects not only tell part of our story, but they are tangible part of our story and by that I mean that when you're flipping through a scrapbook and you're kind of flipping through the pages and look can it with the left one to be able to see an actual race bib instead of just a picture of you wearing that race bib you know the right to do your half marathon or whatever there's something about that again psychologically that really speaks to someone and reaches out to them and makes them feel a little bit more a part of that experience and that's the point of scrapbooking preserving memories to enjoy them, preserving memories to remember to remember and to recall happy times and even difficult times that air still full of blessings. All the stuff that we talked about and day one. So when it comes to where you put the stuff, first thing that comes to mind that I want to share with you is going back to what we talked about yesterday with envelope pages. Project life has several sizes of the envelope age, and this is a great place where you can put things as they are directly in the scrapbook. So I've got some here pull them out again, especially for those who may not have been able to tune into the segment yesterday. But here we have four different sizes. The smallest one is this little six by six, and then we have a six by twelve and there's an eight and a half by eleven and there's a trial by twelve. The differences between these are, of course, take the size that works for you. So if your organization organizing a bunch of big stuff, you know, you're talking about larger items and artwork and whatnot, this makes a lot of sense. Makes a lot of sense to take an envelope, agents, full size stick everything in here, keep it safe, and you have plenty of room, nothing a squished. If it starts getting too full, use a second one. In fact, we sell these like in packs of five knowing that they're super duper handy and you want to use them a lot. Okay papers, standard size eight and a half by eleven papers, tests, report cards, things like that this is first we talked about ribbons, you know, awards medals, things like that can certainly go in the taller, skinnier page envelope page and in the smaller one think about little baby hospital bracelets are a lock of hair or movie tickets or things like that you don't necessarily want to display, and we'll talk about displaying in the scrapbook. But an envelope age certainly can hold this stuff, and not only like during the time you are as a final result in the scott book, but also a fur storage, you know, if you're working on something and you know you want to scrap book and display it, but it might be a little while. You've gotta have a place to hold the stuff for a bit and that's where these really come in handy so I can't speak highly enough of how handy these are this's this is an example of someone on our creative team, catherine davis, some of you know who she is, and this is an example of how she is the tall, skinny six by twelve and she put a bunch of greeting cards in there. This is another example by somebody else thiss comes from jessica turner at the mom creative, and she is also that six by twelve skinning because she didn't want to take up the full page didn't need tio she just needed something to hold some greeting cards. It looks like it looks like some notes from our to her child or something. This one comes from marianne perry and she's, also on our creator, the team, and she has taken aa lot of memorabilia and things that she's working on for an album that she's doing december daily on and keeping it all in the larger twelve by twelve envelope age. Another example. This is petra she's in australia, and she is also using envelope pages, and I want to just point on show you that with them. With the envelope pages. We have these pockets on front for your convenience toe label because sometimes in a scrapbook you can come across. You know this envelope page it's full of stuff, and if you don't have identified, you might forget. In fact I'll change my wording you will forget what's in their way don't have awesome memories you know some of us have stronger memories and others might happens to be of the weaker species my memory is not awesome it's part of why I scrapbook that's a whole other segment we should have created but this is something that's really important you want to label what's in your envelope age and so they are very smart and strategic sizes you have a three by four pocket on the smaller ones you have a four by six pocket on the larger ones and that so that you can just very conveniently take the card straight out of a project like kid and just write your little label no notation your identification of what's in there and slip it in now another thing aside from the the envelope pages is to take the actual page protectors and this is for display this has meant more for storage you don't eat everything to be seen as you're looking through a scuffle but you want to have it in there and that's what that's great for we also have the's page protectors are designed to put things directly in there so you have all of these different sizes and depending on what your item is you slip it right in so as an example claire has some tall skinny should design some some things and I never tell my kids can you can you make this a different size? Because I really wanted to work, you know, over here and scott lucky moms are known to sometimes did that have any of you ever said you guys were a different color today? Because when I take your pictures on the field trip it's gonna look really good with this product that I have that's how we do it sometimes, but I don't do it with my kids, I let them just create do their thing we all do I mean, to the kids are just going to do what they're going to d'oh you have to make that whatever product you have, whatever system you have needs to work with what you're working with, okay, you don't wantto put that around the other way. So in this case claire had johnson things and she folded it lengthwise, which is an unusual way to do it and I thought, well, that's genius, how easy I have this and I can slip it right in and so I did that and I just took a piece of twelve twelve paper. You know, we have that coordinating with all of the additions for those traditional scott vickers who like to do more and slipped that in with the papers in front that's what you see here so envelope ages trimming it down is the next is the next idea and to trim it down that means what I showed you yesterday a little bit when you have some larger things that don't necessarily fit and you're put an envelope age you want to display it but it's just a little bit too big but you don't want to be its own page I'm getting very specific about that circumstance because we're all going to run across it that's when you want to simply trim it down and fit it in and I showed you a live example I'll go back to my albums again in the segment but just to show you a picture this is what I'm talking about I have traditionally every year around the my kidsbirthdays I have him do a hand print what I do is I take acrylic paint just regular acrylic paint that you can get at the craft store and a phone brush and they love the tickling sensation on their hand and we tickle the paint on their hand and yes I still do this with my eleven year old his birthday's coming up he will be doing this on by paid their hand with whatever color kind of thinking ahead what color would look good on what color card stock and how's it look with the other years I kind of begin with the end in mind that way of course and I have them just literally I take their hand I place it down okay, one, two, three and I grabbed their risk, you know, to make sure that we're not just smearing as we get up. One, two, three we lift up somebody else is holding the paper down. I'm looking the hand up, so I'm just walking through that process because I do get a lot of questions anytime I mentioned handprints, I always am asked. Well, how do you do it? There you go, eh? So we have. This handprint is typically done on an eight and a half by eleven. She does card stock and that's fine and good, but I don't need that full in half by eleven page in my scrapbook. I want to display it. And this is what the end result is. I simply trimmed it down to six by six. At some point, my growing children's hands will not fit on a six by six square. For right now it works. And so also in this example, you see a couple more things of handwriting samples and that's notebook paper, you can see that that was an eight and a half by eleven she of notebook paper. I don't need the full sheet. I just need a handwriting sampling, and so I turned that down to six by six slip it in, and I'm done now, sometimes there are things that you're going to want to slip in that don't need trimming. We talked about ticket stubs yesterday. What other ideas come to mind from our list and what's on your mind that you're thinking about ticket stubs? Even a lock of hair can go here think about anything small that just fits right in a little pocket. That's what's really nice about the system as well. What you want to dio instead of just slipping in with with nothing is to slip it and with a piece of card stock behind it to give it a backing. The good news is you don't have to go trimming a piece of card stock we have. You can obviously just pull from a project life kit. You can pull any card, a journaling car to fill er car just whatever a card to put behind it. But we also have textured cards that are designed specifically for this reason the textures, because it gives it that little dimension and it's nice, it feels very nice in quality, and they're solid color so that you're not competing with designs and colors and so forth. So, yes, summary on internet man well, I mean, they have a lot of great ideas, you know, newspaper. But things diplomas, awards pantsless baby name tags and there's a lot of ideas. So the creativity is going. But there is some clarification, actually, that they want around the envelopes. Yeah, susan westberg says with all the items that you're adding using the envelopes and you're using the albums like they were intended for one year, do you find they get satur and you need to use more than one album. They said they used three albums in the first year, and then dt puffy wants to know if those envelopes archival. Yes. Okay, let me answer the last question. Yes, I think they are capable of everything that we make us. Okay, um, I'm trying to I'm trying to make sure I have clarification on the questions that are asked that she it sounds like this person asking is trying to get a chronological year on one album, which does not have to be. You guys understand this about project life. Keep in mind, it was designed in the beginning as a project. Three sixty five you get three hundred sixty five days, fifty two year or weeks, one year and one buck, you know, that's how it began, and I think a lot of people still think it has to be this. Day today or week to week chronological in one album and so forth I want to make sure everyone remembers it does not have to be that way it sounds like she is doing that a lot of people are I've done it I love it it's awesome documentation by her question is that with the envelope pages there getting thicker year by year yes on that your yes find that that because of the envelopes and because of the stuff that they're putting in it gets fatter and fatter and they need tio ad I guess maybe how can they possibly condense it or make it yeah a little more compact yeah well the obvious answer would be we leading to scale back maybe if you're really trying if your goal okay begin with the end in mind right if your goal is that you want to actually have one year in an album then if that's like you're you know the end result then you'll do you'll make choices based on that result which means in this case for your question you're going to want to take that memorabilia and scale back for me personally I don't want to lock me I don't want to get rid of stuff if it's special to me just because I'm trying to fit into an album and so you know that's where you have to decide do you is it really important that you have one year, one album or is it more important that you save more stuff? And it really just depends on your situation because some people really should just keep the one year and one album and not keep going and going and expanding because maybe they're like me and the scott books they're taking up way too much real estate in your house so personal twice for sure, but excellent question keep in mind that it doesn't always have to be in memorabilia envelope pages these are obviously thicker, the material is thicker than a photo pocket page, and so just including this in your albums will add a little dimension, but if you balk them up so much that actually takes up more space expanding this than it does to spread it out in a photo pocket page, if I took, for example, a stack of um it's an example, movie ticket stubs and I stacked up a year's worth of movie ticket stubs in here. If I'm a really, you know an avid moviegoer it's going to bow out that's thick that's going to add puss if I take all those movie ticket stubs and I get a photo pocket page and I spread out a movie ticket per little three by four pocket, which by the way, would look very cool for display reasons, then I'm taking up this much space because they can all fit front back, probably on one page, so hopefully that answer certain. Thank you. Hey, you bet, please. I started having to take lots of pictures of things instead of keeping him. I mean, because my same thing and blow started getting too fat. My album was getting too fat, so choose the things, take a picture of it that takes up a lot less space than I don't arrest my voice and sit down now, because she can actually finish my class where we're going to definitely be talking about that. I'm so glad you brought it up, because a lot of people already get that. They know that if you want to take something that that's dimensional and save some space, you snap a picture of it, so we'll get into some actual tips on that. Excellent. Please let me know if there are other great questions I'm happy to address.

I have been involved with scrapbooking for many years and have made numerous purchases for supplies, a room full and then became so overwhelmed by all of it that I have done very little. The reason being, that I was so conscious of what everyone else was doing and mine never quite measured up to what I saw that others were doing with all the embellishments, and techniques. I then turned to card making because it was a much quicker gratification than studying and laboring over the perfect layout with the perfect paper and etc. I had gotten an earlier Project Life kit of Becky's a few years ago and because of a very busy life had never fully gotten the concept, but thanks to Creative Live and Becky I am on the right track now. I am so very motivated and have recently taken all of my photos out of old albums, boxes, etc. and have them at least in order by years so that now I can begin to document this life of mine. By the way, I just turned 70 and boy does that mean a lot of photos. I am equally excited to get an album started for each of my grandchildren that they can document their own lives. My three youngest are 9,11 and 13 and are so heavily involved in sports, community, church and life itself that they need to document this now, for sure they will forget when they are 70 and trying to play catch-up. I have been a fan and follower of all things Becky Higgins since the beginning of Creating Keepsakes and have always felt she was so very authentic in her aspect of documenting, living life and celebrating everyday living. She is awesome and thank you Creative Live for having her on and allowing so many of us to share in this 3 day event. I know I am catching this in the summer 2014 when In fact this was done in 2013, but better late than not at all. A very special thanks to Becky!!!

I am very excited to document my families life. I have 5 kids and a wonderful husband and life goes so fast. I feel like I do everything on the express train! However, this course was not for someone with the ADD brain. This 3 day course could have easily been consolidated down to one day.... maybe two. I think Becky is adorable, however, think she said the same thing over and over again just a different way. I am excited to start project life and review the videos as I need to.

I need help with organization and this class really helped. I also love the simplicity of Project Life. One of my favorite things was how pictures are taken of kids projects to preserve them rather than keeping the originals. Photos of hands has also become a new interest thanks to one of the guest presenters. This class was worth every penny!
