Printing & Archiving Photos
So with printing that we're going to go through this fairly quickly, so there's a couple ways we can print our stuff one obvious ways we can print them a home, which would you say a lot of people print at home for first scrapbooking in terms of scott booking, I think that we probably have a big chunk of people that do print at home. I personally don't print at home as much because I'm still trying to find the right printer that works with my flow that has a good quality that matches up to the quality of my prince print elsewhere, but I think we're going to talk about in a minute, so yeah, there's a chunk, but it's not I don't think it's the majority that print at home, okay, I think people realize that that can add up really fast stores, inc and stuff it is getting better, though, and it is time consuming, yeah, especially if you want to do it right, right? Because you have color calibration and so much involved in doing it right. So I happen to be a fan of absent when it comes to prin...
ting my own photos. Everybody has their own preference, the one thing I do want to mention about this is you're going to get a dramatic quality difference between a laser printer and an ancient printer you do not want to use a laser printer for this sort of thing for scrap booking because the quality just isn't there great for everyday printing not for scrapbook prince lazar no laser laser I thought it was the opposite no because what happens is the late the quality on laser is good but with the inch of the way that it lays down the ink in this precision and the type of things that they use is just better quality for found us for photos specifically for phone yeah and I happen to like absent okay hey girl up it out really well why the forty forty one forty four inches salute is necessary it is s o s o that's at home printing obviously another option is to send it elsewhere to have them printed so there is there's a service called persnickety prince they're utah based company and becky actually has a lot of experience in working with them I know that they have a lot of services that are very project life centric so if you want maybe just mentioned something about yeah persnickety prince the reason I use them is because they name persnickety if you don't know means particular about the details I have learned and using them for my own personal printing that they really do care and you don't find that with mass princess who were just spitting out hundreds and thousands of pictures every day and so I I'm it's a preference it's a personal thing but I'm such a fan of what persnickety prints is doing for my own personal projects and the quality is impeccable and they care about their customer service but they also offer those rounded corners for people who care about that I personally could go either way sometimes they print them with a rounded corners like the project life products sometimes I don't but regardless they have options for the for the texture and the finish of the prince and it's always spectacular and yeah, I'm just I'm very, very happy and that's why when people say, well, where does becky print where's becky print e I always went with persnickety prints, so it just kind of tad real quickly I actually had a conversation a couple of days ago with shari persnickety prints and let me tell you I'm passionate about technology and becky is passion about scrapbooking and documenting all things life shari is passionate about prince no questioning she is I'm glad you got very energetic she was wonderful to talk to you and she knows customer service so I think it's a great resource yeah definitely check that one out but certainly everybody does have their personal preference you know? I don't know where everybody's printing but there are just big chains and big names and there's also, you know, really small local printing shops to just find what works for you that fits with your flow and that makes it convenient again if it's simple it'll get done and so make that process simple for you and if you're not sure and you try different things and give something like persnickety prints dot com it's a web site a try or try your local costco where you can pick up in an hour or try your local walgreens or target or you know there's just so many places that you can try but it's all getting more and more convenient you click you upload print we are getting a lot of love for a per second persnickety prince persnickety personal e I don't use that word very often but now that I know what it means getting your tio cabin own it and here's one thing that I am persnickety about as is sharia persnickety prince say that five times fast and that is when I talked to her a couple of days ago she said there's one thing that a lot of people just have a hard time understanding so I thought I would do her a favor and kind of cover this real quick in this so we have a pocket here that's a four by three okay and we have a four by three picture that we want to slide into that pocket makes sense right that's good it's nice and neat okay what if we have a the same four by three but it's the other orientation how does that look right? So obviously we have a challenge here, so one way to work around that is well, let's just blow it up and that way it will fill the pocket right? So we'll do that. Okay, looks okay, but then we are losing information. We have to chop off the top on the bottom to compensate said if it's in that pocket okay, so that doesn't look that bad in this case here because you know it's ok, it's, just a picture of some sand. Yes, grant. Okay, what if we put a person in the same place? Right? So here's a picture of one of our children and, you know, still it's. Ok, until we remember that we're going to lose a lot of the top in the bottom of that. So we just we want to keep that in mind. The orientation is important resolution is important, understand? But orientation is also important to keep in mind as wells were as we're doing some of these things, and by the way, shari is very or to personally work with people that upload images that are the wrong orientation, they'll do whatever they can to to help out with a very customer service based like you said, like really wanted to hold people's hands yeah that's what I think so another thing I want to touch on kind of along those lines is the idea of using a word processor you mentioned this in an earlier segment of using a word processor to make a collage of images okay, so I have to use an application called pages it's it's like microsoft word it's an apple product very easy to work with essentially what I do and I do I did have a demo that I wanted to go through, but we're limited on time because I talk too much essentially what we do here is we create a four by three or four by six frame so we have a reference point and then all we dio high level conceptual is we drag and drop images into that and we just use the handles around the corners to resize that so that fits in the right place and move the placement around so that they all fit up nice and he just like in this example right here and if you guys aren't familiar with that he's explaining it because we don't have time to demo but as soon as you get in there and you see what he means by grabbing handles grabbing this corners literally clicking here and bringing it in and clicking that I'm bringing out it's as easy as it sounds really I do it all the time piece of cake s so there's two things you can do with this one at this point one you can print it out if you do at home printing, so go ahead and size it four by six or four by three and printed at home or another option is if you know how to take screen grabs, you can set it up in pages or word or something like that and then take a screen grab of that make it as big as you can on the screen so it's higher resolution and then take a screen grab of that area and then you can send that off to be printed the larger it is on the screen when you take that screen, grab the higher the resolution and the higher the quality so again, resolution is important, ok, so again, I did have a demo here, we're gonna blow through that we'll talk about the last thing which is archiving, archiving and backing up. So this is a quote of mine, actually, because I say all the time, I cannot tell you how many people I don't understand the concept that they have to back up their data very important. You've got a lot of love on your system in the form of pictures, okay? And so if your data doesn't exist in at least three different places on two different types of of media consider that it doesn't exist at all what I mean by that is have a copy at home have a copy it my sister's house your bring it over right I have a copy somewhere else have a copy in the cloud have a copy somewhere else right if your only copies on your hard drive and a hard drive next to it and heaven forbid your house burns down both copies were gone or somebody breaks in and takes him both copies were gone okay the reason for the two different types of media back in the day a lot of people archived on cd and dvd okay that's still ok but technology changes okay so what works today may not work two years from now five years from now fifty years from now so try and keep up with technology that way so these are some examples of some hard drives or storage external storage devices now I'm going to keep this high level not to get too technical um these air basically hard drives so the one on the left here is a small portable hard drive very cheap very simple you can see the price range right here on all of these the advantage to that is it is cheap it is portable you can take it with you on vacation and use that as a backup the next one over is the same thing just a larger version of that usually it's higher capacity and it's cheaper per gigabyte if you get into the into the two on the right these air called raid systems are a I d and these air systems without getting too technical that have multiple hard drives when your data is written to those hard drives, it saves that one file across multiple drives in the event that a dr dies you replace it with a new drive and you don't lose data ok? They are more expensive but they're definitely better for securing your your digital assets um and they and they and in the storage is is pretty extensible on those um oh one thing I wanted to mention is that the last time I checked you know how many hard drives fail now I'm going to tell you I don't know okay? Does anybody know? Okay? Up to thirteen percent that doesn't sound like a lot, but up to thirteen percent of all consumer grade hard drives die in the first year. Okay, has anybody in the first year in the first year in the first year back up? I can't say enough back up, back up, back up! I know a lot of people that they lose a driving lesson, kevin I lost my hard drive can you help me in a lot of cases? Sure, we can help but may cost you thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars so it's a lot cheaper to pick up a three hundred dollars drive now and get in the habit of backing up than it is to recover, try and recover that data because sometimes you can't recover it so and again I could spend days on just backing up alone but um hopefully that kind of gets you in the right mind frame there the last thing I want to mention here along the lines of backup in archival is cloud based services or software that helps drive backing up. These are just some examples I happening is dropbox for archival not necessarily for backup but it's still access another copy out in the cloud in the event that I lost my laptop or any of my devices that's ok, because I've got a copy out in the cloud to get I use it as well it's also great for sharing like we talked about awesome sharing same as the regular resolution or is it a smaller resolution in question? It actually saves it as whatever you tell it to save. So if I had a massive two gig family portrait on my hard drive that I'm editing, if I move that over into dropbox that same quality moves on down the shrink it down with some right exactly because if you look at drop boxes that cz that same two gig file so the quality is the same everything is identical carbon copy is another piece of software that helps automate the process of backing up your data time machine is an apple product that's built into mac os ten that helps you teo facilitate that back in the process and then crash plan is another online backup resource to use so again I can't say it enough back up back up back up I'm not going to make you raise your hands on guy don't want you to feel guilty, but if you're not backing up we should talk offline let's talk because I really I feel so strong about backing up your data I see I see it all the time where people lose their data and it's not pretty because now it could be their lives it could be very emotional for me I know people who have lost I personally have lost not pictures, but I used to keep my journal on the computer when we were first married that's the way I did it was faster and easier and we didn't backing up wasn't even a term I thought of or knew of and I don't know what happened are computer crashed I lost my whole journal probably two years or so of my married my newly married life and that was a loss that's a deep loss for me because I can I have a horrible memory you guys know this and now I don't have that treat recall yeah unfortunately the way the tech industry is going is so many applications will almost force you to put your data in the cloud which is really great for someone like me who you know I might lose my laptop or whatever and if I happen to have not backed up in the last couple of days then I know that that's out there somewhere there's a copy somewhere available so it's great that the tech industry is sort of addressing that for us as well yeah absolutely cool yeah so I mean that's again that's high oh my gosh I know really I was trying to not fly as fast as I did but there's so much to talk about with tech and is I love it it's great and I think he goes hand in hand with the things you do is scrapping it does and that's why I went into teo to address some of these issue there's some of the most common questions that weekend and even some of the questions that I have he was addressing because backing up I know he preaches it I do back up my husband's even better about backing up than I do but I'm thinking as he's talking about it I'm not sure when the last time was I backed up because I relied on a little a little too much on david and when was the last time he did? I'm sure he's on top of it but it makes me want to be a little bit more conscious of where am with that because I would be devastated if I lost a chunk of pictures that would be really an emotional loss yeah and there's a lot of after systems out there that really make it easy to I mean, you don't have it's not it's, not the sort of thing you have to spend a lot of time on yeah, you know, you just you want to find something that's easy to use and there's a lot of easy to use solutions out there and it's just finding something simple just to make sure you're backed up knowing david like I know you sure you're backed up well because he talks to you and I talk to you and you talk to google thank you so much we're not cutting you off, right? Okay, so I'm not sure if there are comments or questions that come from our internet audience that we want to share we just got a few, but I think before we go to an expert we just want to say a huge thank you to kevin for being with us today huge credit for live round of course, for chemical guy you're serious about tune and be from arizona, says o n g there's so much info in this segment hopefully my baby will take a long that but it has been incredible what we are going to go to our fifteen minute breaks. So, becky, we set us up with what we're going to do when we absolutely thank you. We are going to be in the next segment talking more specifically about digital project life, and I have another guest instructor, carrie hall, for a team. I'll talk more about her in a minute, but one last note before we talk about that or go into that are going to break aa lot of people whenever kevin shares anything on my site or anything through my social media, the question is, can I take him home with me? Can I have him in my back pocket? And you actually can? Kevin does have a home base on the web naturally it's, kevin all guyer, dot com a l l a g a I iar kevin all guard dot com is just where he has his home central for information sharing, and he does have this ability to help people and hold their hand individually as well as just general sharing. So be sure you check that out and we'll see you in the next segment.

I have been involved with scrapbooking for many years and have made numerous purchases for supplies, a room full and then became so overwhelmed by all of it that I have done very little. The reason being, that I was so conscious of what everyone else was doing and mine never quite measured up to what I saw that others were doing with all the embellishments, and techniques. I then turned to card making because it was a much quicker gratification than studying and laboring over the perfect layout with the perfect paper and etc. I had gotten an earlier Project Life kit of Becky's a few years ago and because of a very busy life had never fully gotten the concept, but thanks to Creative Live and Becky I am on the right track now. I am so very motivated and have recently taken all of my photos out of old albums, boxes, etc. and have them at least in order by years so that now I can begin to document this life of mine. By the way, I just turned 70 and boy does that mean a lot of photos. I am equally excited to get an album started for each of my grandchildren that they can document their own lives. My three youngest are 9,11 and 13 and are so heavily involved in sports, community, church and life itself that they need to document this now, for sure they will forget when they are 70 and trying to play catch-up. I have been a fan and follower of all things Becky Higgins since the beginning of Creating Keepsakes and have always felt she was so very authentic in her aspect of documenting, living life and celebrating everyday living. She is awesome and thank you Creative Live for having her on and allowing so many of us to share in this 3 day event. I know I am catching this in the summer 2014 when In fact this was done in 2013, but better late than not at all. A very special thanks to Becky!!!

I am very excited to document my families life. I have 5 kids and a wonderful husband and life goes so fast. I feel like I do everything on the express train! However, this course was not for someone with the ADD brain. This 3 day course could have easily been consolidated down to one day.... maybe two. I think Becky is adorable, however, think she said the same thing over and over again just a different way. I am excited to start project life and review the videos as I need to.

I need help with organization and this class really helped. I also love the simplicity of Project Life. One of my favorite things was how pictures are taken of kids projects to preserve them rather than keeping the originals. Photos of hands has also become a new interest thanks to one of the guest presenters. This class was worth every penny!
