Tips for Better Drone Shots
in this lesson, we're going to be giving you some tips for flying with a drone. So in general, like this whole class, we aren't specific to specific models of cameras and this isn't a how to guide to using the DJ I phantom four Pro and the reason we don't want to do that is because D J I has a great series of tutorials that will help you get started with any of their drone models and we know that you might not even have this drone, so it wouldn't be beneficial for you. But what we do want to do in this video is give you our best tips and suggestions for getting better drone video are tip number one is to be safe and to follow the rules. This is very important and it will be different depending on where you live. So in the United States, we have certain laws outside of the country, there are, I'm sure other laws, so it is up to you as the individual to make sure you are following the laws things to keep in mind or to look into our, if you have specific city laws, state laws, country law...
s and wherever you're going to film, make sure that you find out if you're able to actually fly a drone, a lot of places don't allow you to make sure that what you're filming also is allowed to be filmed. If you're flying commercially, you'll probably need to take a test and get licensed to fly your drone commercially, meaning if you're making any money from the video that you're shooting with your drone, if you're flying just for fun, you might not have to but of course it will depend on the laws of your local area. So that's our first tip and that really is up to you to go out and do our next tip is to use your basic exposure and compositional rules. Make sure you practice with your drone to know how you manually adjust your settings so that you're not trying to fumble around once you're flying. And then with compositional rules and tips, make sure you're using things like perhaps the rule of thirds or keeping your landscapes and your horizons straight. Maybe using a lot of negative space of course with the drone, you can get different types of shots, changing up your perspective and your angle getting really far. Still being somewhat close up with a drone, you can get all types of shots with the drone, which is one of the reasons it's so amazing. The most important thing though, which is our next tip is to truly have a story and tell a story with your video. It's really cool to fly a drone and to just start filming. But it's important to have a subject. The subject could be anything, it could be a mountain in the distance. It could be a car driving by whatever it is though. Think about what your subject is preferably before you start flying and then plan out. That shot, have a shot that tells the story of that subject. Maybe it is just a big wide shot of a scene of a city. But think of ways to make that shot more interesting perhaps with foreground elements. One thing that you'll quickly notice when you bring your footage back into your computer is that it's not as smooth as it might have seemed when you were flying, when you're looking at the small screen and you're flying, everything looks super buttery smooth. But when you're editing it you get sort of slight jitters. So you probably will have to apply a little bit of stabilization to your shots in post. So just be aware of that when you are shooting, that brings me to my next tip is to avoid camera movement while you're shooting. Now you can get good at this with practice but in general use the motion of the drone itself for any motion in your shot and not panning or tilting your camera. If you do do it very slowly and perhaps throughout an entire shot. But if you're trying to adjust your angle during the middle of a shot, it's probably gonna look too quick and not so good. So set up your shot, make sure your cameras at the perfect angle and then use the drones movement whether it's forwards backwards up or down left or right to have that movement of the shot. So those are just some of our tips for flying your drone in the next video, we're just going to go over the different types of shots that you can get with a drone to keep in mind when you're out shooting.
