Creating Custom Journaling with Text Tool
Talk about a white space layout let's start with this layout. We're gonna be talking about journaling first s o we already have a title on here and there's a few different ways that you can add journaling now, of course, our first instinct and I'm just going to use temporary journaling. I'm just going to write journaling instead of actually typing out of story just so that we have words to process are first instinct is tio, just click down here at the bottom who we need a much smaller found I was twelve actually to sixteen just so we can see it and I'm going to change it to I brought a front with me, so I'm gonna change it to a typewriter fund that I really like. I'm just going to type out journaling. This is our basic instinct four journaling oh, my layout is done now I'm just going to add some journaling wherever it fits journal, blah, blah, blah, but it doesn't have to be that way. We don't have to just add aware fits and and call it good, we can make it part of the design. So let's...
, let's talk about how the journaling can be a part of this design I'm going to use a shape the shape tool. And we've been using the shape too a lot today because there's a lot of different things that you can do with it and I'm gonna use the rectangle tool in this case and instead of it being a shape which is gonna have a phil I wanted to be a path and someone change its path and then I think I want my journaling too kind of moved down the page. Tio create a visual line straight down tio lead your eye to the photo and then away from the photo. So a really easy way to do that is to come in here and it always polls from the center for me. Let's, pull it from the sunday okay to come in here, we're just going to create a rectangle and it creates a rectangle path. So if we want to move it, we have toe use the paths election tool so we can move it over a little bit and then, um it's not wide enough for me, so let's make it a little bit wider with the direct selection tool and that sound that looks good to me right about here. Ok, so now we have a path that's ready for our journaling and we can click right in the path and what happens changed backto sixteen because it really wants to be really big, typical okay what happens now is if I type journaling and I copy it over and over again to make it faster it's going tio phil just to the edges of that shape so anything if I type the smaller word it would go right to the edge if it's too long of a word it's just going to move to the next line and now you can play in here with your different character tools and paragraph tools you can have it force justify so that it actually fills the shape completely and it'll space out the letters to do that so if you want it to look like a solid rectangle and and make sure that it goes all the way edge to edge you can do that you could have it centered you can have it left or right justified it's up to you I'm going to I'm gonna force justify it just to do it and now once I have the journaling done up here I'm just going tio command an option and click and drag it down holding down shifts so that it goes in a straight line and now it's part of you would obviously finish your story but now it's part of the design rather than an afterthought it leads your eye too the photo and then away from it as you read the journaling so that is how you can use um text boxes or shape the shape tool if you want to type inside the shape tool you can also type on the outside of the shape tool so let's say that I wanted to type all the way around the outside edges of this layout which is another never going to stop doing it okay when I create a square cared of this thing in create a square and I'm going to move it to the center of the layout ish close enough okay so now if I wanted tio instead of typing inside the square I wanted to type on the outside of this where I can click all right to move my mouth where it shows that little wavy line and it's now it's set to if I click to journal on the outside and I can do that liberty over here were there and as I go around the outside of the of the thing it'll turn the corner with me yes it's an ah ha moment okay so what happens if I run out of room now if I were to duplicate the journaling layer and then make it smaller to make it like another another rectangle is actually going to reduce the size of my journaling as well and the text size and we can fix that easily by just going in and changing it back to sixteen and as many concentric squares as you need to fill up the shape and you're good to go so you can you can journal on the inside of shapes and you. Khun journal. On the outside of shapes.

I have recently discovered digital scrapbooking and have been using a great scrapbooking software that I downloaded on-line. There are limitations with the software that prompted me to look deeper for ideas. Traci's course was fantastic! I learned so much from her not only in scrapbooking layouts and using different elements in a page but my level of understanding of photoshop has improved dramatically. The presentation was easy to follow and broken into perfect chunks to go back and review the techniques. Thank you so much Traci for presenting this awesome course. I will look for more of your courses. Your scrapbooking is beautiful and inspiring!

I'm a photographer. I do a lot of graphic design for my business. I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable. I saw this class being shown for free on Creative Live one day and it wasn't my first choice to watch, but was the best out of the list... I was wrong. This is a great class. I didn't expect to learn that much and I've been learning a lot! Great info!

Not only did she talk about how to do things in Photoshop [the computer steps] but she also explained art and design tips: what looks good and what doesn't on a page. That was a very nice touch.
