Lighting Effects: Learning Radial Gradient

Let's talk about lighting effects, so I picked it was really neat trick from a scrapbook er at sweet shop called her name is akira, and I've seen people do this before, but I never thought about it, so it was really interesting for me to go and learn how to do this. So let's, open this up, I have this cute layout of my boy, and what I'm going to do is I'm going to use lighting effects to highlight the photo of my boy, and so what this does is it kind of very subtly is another way to draw your eye into a photo. So what we're going to d'oh is we're going to make a new lair, and we're going to go to our grady in't tool, and there are lots of options for your great aunt tool. You don't have to just make radiance in a straight line. You can also make radiance that this was called reflected. Um, this one is kind of ah, radiant that goes, it can create lines in the middle, and this is a starburst radiant you can use there's, all sorts of effects that you can use. Um, we're going to use the ra...

dio great aunt, which is this one right here, we're going to change it to black and white, and we want to change this black we want the white part to be the highlight in the black part will be the shadow so we want if I want to highlight this we want the white to be here and then the black to be going towards the outside so we you start in the middle of the photo to draw your grady it and make sure you're doing it on a new layer otherwise if you do it on I'm not new layer it's actually just going to take out your your layout completely it's not what we wanted to make sure you're doing it on a new layer and now you could see when I did that that the black was actually in the center so if you have that problem you can um make sure you have that problem you want to make sure that your black is actually your background color and the white is your foreground color so let's try that again and you don't want a huge highlight if you draw way out here than the white is going to be huge so we just want a small highlight right over the photo okay so it's still kind of obliterated so this is where blend modes come in and I'm going to change this one too soft light and it's wow intense so we don't want that too so we're going to change the opacity and we're going to really reduce it so that it doesn't affect that that much, but if I turn this off, you can see that the highlight disappears was a little more intense now, because, um, I used black and white that shadowing is really intense, so if you're having if you're using light papers and you're having a hard time with that, what you're going to want to do instead of black and white is you're gonna want to make this more of a medium gray somewhere up in the middle of here, you still need the contrast, so it can't be super light, but if you make it just a little bit lighter than that black, then you won't have the problem of it totally obliterating your layout as much to do that again, and then we'll change it to soft like and you can see the highlight we're gonna probably drop that down a little bit more, but you can see the highlight doesn't you can see the highlight over the photo and it doesn't knock out your papers now you can actually do this on this photo, too. If you want to highlight both of them, it requires just a little bit more work were again going tio draw a circle, but when we are draw a radio radiant, but when we do that it's going to have gray all the way out here and they're going to kind of cancel each other out. So we don't want that here. If I drop the opacity down tto forty percent like the other one forty, forty, they kind of just cancel each other out. So what we're going to do instead is we're going to take all of this gray where music, the magic wantto. We're going to delete it so that all we have is the highlight, and that works because and we're going to leave the gray underneath the highlight. So make sure that you have this highlight where you want it to be before you delete and you can just delete from the gray. And now it's creates two highlights if you merge them together of the opacity that we could merge them together successfully. Okay, now, soft light and then you go creates two highlights so you can highlight multiple portions of your layout and it just it kind of gives it, especially on layouts like this. You can really focus in on the picture that we want to focus on.

I have recently discovered digital scrapbooking and have been using a great scrapbooking software that I downloaded on-line. There are limitations with the software that prompted me to look deeper for ideas. Traci's course was fantastic! I learned so much from her not only in scrapbooking layouts and using different elements in a page but my level of understanding of photoshop has improved dramatically. The presentation was easy to follow and broken into perfect chunks to go back and review the techniques. Thank you so much Traci for presenting this awesome course. I will look for more of your courses. Your scrapbooking is beautiful and inspiring!

I'm a photographer. I do a lot of graphic design for my business. I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable. I saw this class being shown for free on Creative Live one day and it wasn't my first choice to watch, but was the best out of the list... I was wrong. This is a great class. I didn't expect to learn that much and I've been learning a lot! Great info!

Not only did she talk about how to do things in Photoshop [the computer steps] but she also explained art and design tips: what looks good and what doesn't on a page. That was a very nice touch.
