Make Your Own Pennant & Banners

So who loves penance and banners? I mean, I love when they're included in kits and I use them a lot, but you don't have to have them included in the kit to use them you can make them really quickly and simply so I actually made this banner for this layout and we're gonna make one together too, and I'm going to show you how to make a couple different banner styles closes, so I have all of these layouts and I'm opening half finished because this is where I would do it in the process anyway, so we have ah, a nice little banner right here that's anchored by buttons, but aligning these and rotating them perfectly can be kind of tedious if you don't know a few tricks of the trade, so we're going to go back teo the polygon tool and we're going to make it a triangle with three points instead of six and I'm going to draw the triangle when you draw it, you can draw it straight up and down, but it's going to get bigger so what we want to do is just draw a triangle and not worry about what it want...

s, what we wanted to look like right away and now I can go in with the direct election tool and I can make it a little bit longer so that feels like a pennant and if you hold downshift it'll keep it dragging in a straight line shift is your friend if you don't hold downshift then every which way you turn the mouse it's going to move the bottom of the penan and it will be off center you know one a pendant that looks like that so make sure you hold down shift to drag the bottom down to make it longer you can also make it sinner if you want tio hello I really like this so um the next thing that you want to do to create a pennant or a banner is just click and drag to duplicate it all the way across so there are six triangles on this one sorting basic strangles let me well them up so we can see him six triangles all the way across and we want the edges touching because if they if it's a banner they're going to be on some kind of string they're going to sit down and they're going to be touching and we're actually not going to create string or stitching toe hold this one down so it's really important that they're touching so that there's continuity in the banner so I resize it a little bit so that it fits better now this could be a pain in the butt we wanted to curve and we don't want it like if we just go through and we start rotating these they're going to be wonky but it doesn't work so well so what I want to dio is I want tio start in the middle and these two are going to be flat they're not going to be rotated at all but if we see like these two together and we change the point of rotation to the edge because we wanted to rotate from the corner so that they sailing together we can make this one let's rotate it just negative three degrees well let's do a little bit higher negative six okay, so that's what it start? It rotated from the center point so it's still connected? It rotated both of them together but we need this one to be a little bit more angled up so let's too change the point of rotation now the problem with this is it's going to want to automatically go to the corner of your shape? We don't want that we want it to be right here. So you have to make sure that the center of rotation lands on the corner of the actual triangle and not the corner of the shape and let's do the exact same again negative six now the reason that I'm using whole numbers instead of just just randomly doing it is because I'm oh cd enough that I wanted to match on this site so we're going just like those of them again and we're going to change the center of rotation and on this side it's going to be six degrees instead of negative six and then we repeat the process with this one now that whole number is gonna come in handy again let's do six degrees and now we have a nice shaped banner and the problem that we have now there is another problem is that if I come in here and I have these papers handy dandy ready if I come in here in clip these papers to dependence as they are the especially when you have things like stripes which I d'oh we're going to have issues with the continuity of the pattern, you can see that the the striped doesn't follow the banner now not everyone's going to care about that I care, so that is why the whole number is important. We know that this one was rotated six degrees so we can match the paper perfectly and this one was rotated twelve degrees because we rotated at six degrees twice so we can match it perfectly is anyone else's obsessive is me about that kind of stuff? I don't think so, but it's good, I know there's someone out there that is so it's a good thing to know will be now you know that you know that they have a problem and so finally when we build this banner altogether course now I'm gonna have problems because I rotated these you would want to bring in a fresh copy but we can fix it if this one was rotated twelve degrees um we'd have to rotate it back twelve degrees and then another twelve degrees so that's twenty four all together to fix it will be negative twenty four on the side math who thought math and digital scrapbooking but you don't have to be math liz it's pretty easy math problem no this one back and this one is going to be twelve degrees and getting twelve degrees to fix the rotation but we're just gonna have to white ones in the middle will be easier that way okay so now we have one more problem this banner is rotated on the layout and right now it's not so we have to make sure that we not only grab all of the penance but we grab the papers too you can merge at this point if you know that you're not going to change anything um I like to leave everything on merged always until the very end so we want to rotate everything together and then put place it over your layout where you want it to be there we go now there's other banner options as well um let's go back to number two huh? Who likes these kind? I love those they're really easy to make two they look harder than they are so we're going to draw with the shape tool just a rectangle he's drawing from the center I want I want today. So try with a rectangle turn off the grid just so we can see it has changed the color so that we can really see it make it yellow. Okay, so what's important for your own sanity is that you make sure that you have and even size so we wanted to be exactly two inches or exactly for inge is because then it's going to give you a really clear centerpoint, which is kind of a one inch in this instance and so tio make it notch instead of being a flat side right here we want to take the pen tool and we want to go to the add anchor point tool here we want to stick an anchor point right here at one inch on the edge of the banner and you can see when you add the anger point adds handles when so if I pull that anger point right now, it's going to curve the banner but to fix that you just go to the convert point tool and click on it and it will make it flat instead of having handles and then you can take this point and dragon in as far as you want if you'll downshift little dragon straight now you have a nice notched banner now if you want a duplicate banner like the one that I have here you're going to have an issue if you just duplicate this banner it's making a different color so we can see it if you just duplicate this banner and then resize it you're gonna have an issue it's gonna move in from all sides and you can see that it doesn't do that here so all you have to do to edit the path it's just like both of these anchor points and I like I used to direct selection tool and then just drag us election around both anchor points it's like them both at the same time and you can drag it out and now you have one that looks just like this and you can lay your papers together the pentacle the shape to fool all of these things or your friends when you want an original design that has a lot of shapes, any kind of shape obviously you khun d'oh. So jake hale is there uh, anything going on in the chat rooms I need to know about not even about just some great feedback I mean policy girls and this is amazing. I should have known this already but this is just such an awesome trick on dive really really appreciated this for what you get started with a digital scrapbook and every has been really blown away just by us no wonder we're translating at home with your hearing all these hot, simple. This is, but I think this has been an incredible example of how simple these very advanced techniques actually are. Yes, it looks so much harder than it actually is, and that's kind of why I wanted to do this class is because, you know, people say, oh, I can't do that it's it's, beyond my skill level, but it's, really not it's, not beyond your skill level, is just you don't know. And once you know, your whole life changes and you can scrapbook so much differently than you are right now.

I have recently discovered digital scrapbooking and have been using a great scrapbooking software that I downloaded on-line. There are limitations with the software that prompted me to look deeper for ideas. Traci's course was fantastic! I learned so much from her not only in scrapbooking layouts and using different elements in a page but my level of understanding of photoshop has improved dramatically. The presentation was easy to follow and broken into perfect chunks to go back and review the techniques. Thank you so much Traci for presenting this awesome course. I will look for more of your courses. Your scrapbooking is beautiful and inspiring!

I'm a photographer. I do a lot of graphic design for my business. I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable. I saw this class being shown for free on Creative Live one day and it wasn't my first choice to watch, but was the best out of the list... I was wrong. This is a great class. I didn't expect to learn that much and I've been learning a lot! Great info!

Not only did she talk about how to do things in Photoshop [the computer steps] but she also explained art and design tips: what looks good and what doesn't on a page. That was a very nice touch.
