Adding Text Box Autoheight to Autolayout in Figma

Hi, everyone in this video, we are going to cover something that we already know called an auto layout. We're gonna do something called a double auto layout. That's a name I made up. Um, but we're also going to look at something that I didn't make up something called auto height for text boxes. So the auto layout part is the stuff we already know. Ok. It means we can kind of reorder these things, we can duplicate them, we can play around with the spacing of them. Ok. So that's one of the perks of auto layout. We're gonna double down on the auto layout so that when we adjust things like text. Ok. Uh Add more stuff. Can you see, look, it expands out and pushes the rest of them out? There is something called auto height on a text box. All right, let's jump in and I'll show you how to make it. All right, to get started for this one. I'm gonna draw out another. Well, I'm gonna duplicate this frame, make a reviews page and just kind of get the working parts together. I'm gonna do it in speed...

mode. So, uh I'll see you in a sec. All right. We paused here only just got started. I'm like, can't hang the green, the gray. Ok. So adjusting your kind of uh, presets. Ok. You can go in here and you can say actually way too green Dan. And I probably want it to be darker as well. Here we go, hinder green. So now it's adjusted there and anywhere else I've used it. Where else have I used it? There we go it in that menu there. All right. Now, speed designing, jumping back in. Oh Man. Smart select. So good. All right. Back on. All right, you're back. That is my little review thing. OK. So what I want to do like at the beginning there, I want this to be able to stretch up and down and kind of play with the spacing. So we're gonna do a double auto layout. Hey, OK. So to do the double auto layout, um actually we're going to start with uh auto height. OK. So we ignored this in the earlier one. You might have been like, hey, he didn't tell us what that one did. So this one here auto with OK. We know that goes on forever that way. And this one here is like a fixed size. So it means that when I draw it out, OK, there's, you know, it's got a height, the text can kind of expand out of it, but that's the, the height. There's like a fixed height on that. What we're gonna do is do an option. There's this one here. Ok. So it's kind of like a fixed width, but an automatic height. And you see the cool thing about it, it sucked that up to the bottom there and it just means the height is going to get bigger. See the height gets bigger that's going to be handy because that blue box is going to be what pushes the outside frame out. And basically it's exactly like we did with the uh where are we, these things? OK. This one pushes left and right. OK. So it's pinned. You know, we've used the constraints to the right and the bottom. This one's gonna do something slightly different. All right, we need this to be this parent frame to be auto height. Let's call this one reviews. OK? And we need this parent like we did before with the that kind of like transparent black box. We said make it auto height and it worked. It kind of works. It is gonna work. Ok. But the trouble is actually let's see if it works without anything else. It's hugging contents. So my auto H box can, can you get bigger? It does, hey, it works job done except with this stuff. So what it's saying is when you've got more than one object, we're kind of back to that list. Remember that NAV list we made, sorry, I'm zooming out. Uh Was that NAV list there it is there. So remember we had a couple of different things. OK. When we do one thing, it just works. OK? Like that. When we have a couple of things, it ends up trying to stack them or where's the parent frame of this one frame? One? Or we can go left or right? OK. Great. So we want up and down for this one, but all of these objects need to be just like one group. So I'm gonna undo lots of undoing. Please hold the way up. So basically what I want to do is stack just this part and all of this top stuff. So I'm going to grab a U and all of that and just make it a unit. I could group it, I could turn it into a frame. Let's turn it into a frame. Let's go. You are a frame a slightly different way. I'm doing it over here in the layers panel or you could right, click it here or use your shortcut. So now there's actually only two things in this list. So it's going to go. Now, parent frame, let's make you what it out. Kind of sucked it in from that side there. It depends like it's trying to remember. It's trying to hug the contents like my t-shirt. So this text box here just needs to help push this out. If you need it to be a certain width, it's still uh the flexible height. Ok. Or order height. So now if I have somebody that has a really long, uh, review, ok. It adjusts nice. Ah, so that one there is really handy, especially for this type of big boxy T stuff. So let's get it to be more than one. So we've done an auto layout already and we used it. Ok. Mainly to stack these two things inside. Now we're gonna do some more stacking. So we're back to our uh double auto layout. So we've got this thing here. It's a frame, OK? But it's been converted into this auto layout, which is going up and down. OK? So what we're gonna do is is explain that this parent container, auto layouts the things inside of it. So what we're gonna need is a parent container for two of these. OK? So these two the inside guys, so we need a framer on the outside and we can do that by saying let's create a auto layout. So this is the double auto layout that I was mentioning. So these guys, OK. This review just here, let's say this one uses auto layout to f to stack these things inside of this, this outside auto layout stacks. These guys who happen to be also auto layouts but don't have to be OK? So I've got this one. I need another one. So I'm gonna go, you select them commandee the little when you're using an auto layout, the little pink dot Appears. I wish it kind of did. It's kind of useful. Right. But commandee commandee, look how good we are and the nice things about it again, we can apply it with the spacing so we can drag it. There we go. Type it in using 24. Ok. And when these adjust, when I adjust a copy and paste a couple of them, I don't know what it's doing. All right. Text. Select the text. I don't know why it's not like the text. All right, nothing's working. I think mine's frozen. It does happen. People yours might freeze a lot more than mine. This is like the first time mine's frozen. I'm gonna close it and open it back up. I'll be back in a sec. Alright. We're back. Let's see if I fixed it. Peace, peace, peace. It's working again. All right. So we went a bit deep on this one. Hopefully again to help explain some of the fancy stuff you see about fig a around and it's kind of like, oh my goodness. Imagine if it could do that. We know how now, OK. We've combined two things. There's new auto height, OK? For text box. And plus we've gone uh two layers deep for auto layout, there's an auto layout operating on this o there's an auto layer operating inside of this kind of frame, but there's also one operating on the total outside. So we're going to call this one, our review stack. All right. That is gonna be it for this video. I will see it in the next one.
