Printing for Scrapbooking

In the print module we talked a little bit about all of these layout areas here we talked a little bit about photo information and these kind of text things that you could move around there's a lot more play here it's a lot more free handed work that you could do inside of the print module but like we were saying earlier, if you have a say in absent printer twelve inch epps and our thirteen and japs and printer in your house right next your computer then what we like to do and my wife loves um the matte paper and so will print stuff out on the mat paper and then she can cut it up and put it in scrapbooks from the jet printer so you don't necessarily even have to go and go to costco to print it. You could just print it on matt paper here in the in the house um but one of the things that you can do is a custom package and a custom package allows you to just drag images onto a surface like this and then you can resize those toe whatever size you want them to be and it's very custom and fi...

t as many pictures as you want on it to see how they're different pictures so I can have you know, whatever pictures I want on there and then just print out a whole sheet of of photos so if you're in a position where you have worked through all your photos you found the photos you want to scrapbook you've adjusted the photos you want to scrap book and now you just want to prints and prince of them and you want to cut him up and start scrapbooking them there's a great place to do that and you can also add to the package again if you want a specific size you say I want to make sure this is an eight by ten just click eight by ten and it will give you an eight by ten area and then just grab your photograph and drag it in and now you have well you have an eight by twelve now but you can also tell it to not lock see how this is locke aspect ratio so we could tell it not do that um we can add like a three by seven there we go there's a three by seven and then I believe there's a keystroke or command keystroke that will allow you oh well there's a commit keystroke that'll keep it from doing that like it it will put it within the window but if you turn off the lock photo aspect ratio it will then allow it to go so if you unlock that it keeps the photo is still staying as is but it's cropping it within the borders of that so if you want to change the size of a photograph or if you want to have a weird sized photograph because you know there's a piece of paper you know you want to put like a banner somewhere on a on a scrapbook you know that that's what you're going doing measure the size of that and then make a square that size and then just grab your photo make sure this lock aspect ratio ratio is off drag it in and then you khun oh, this is what it is hold on there okay it's command so if you hold the command key down once you've got it you khun sake I can reposition that in side because otherwise if you grab it you're grabbing them piece of you're grabbing the photograph of moving around on the paper but behold the command key down then you can you can reposition that photograph within that crop or you can change the size of the crop here by, you know, moving it around okay, so those air options for printing stuff out so the custom picture package and the regular picture package are both great ways to get a bunch of images onto a page and print it here at home and then just start cutting it up and using it and I really, really think that the using an inkjet printer with a map paper is super beautiful on a scrapbook because then because your paper is always toothy anyway so you've got this really beautiful toothy paper and then you go to costco and get this really glossy or very you know, it's tze like plastic and you're sticking it on this beautiful toothy paper so I think I think that when you print on an inch up paper that's a matte paper it I think it looks so beautiful to get it all together um because then the whole thing is very tactile and it has the same field so I really like that when I'm looking at a scrapbook that has printed paper from inning job print scrap book as opposed to a album correct yeah does but the other thing you know, the other interesting thing about scrapbooking with inkjet prints rather than photographic prints ink jet lasts longer than photographs are you aware of that? So a photograph may have a rating of seventy years or sixty years or something like that on inkjet print can have a rating of up to two hundred years so because they're just they're more archival the paper is more archival and the ink itself is more archival because it's not going through some crazy chemical process to create it and so it's it's like having a fiber fiber based paper in the photographic darkroom was always the archival uh paper we don't print on five or paper is photograph er's anymore we don't do it so all of that archive illness of a photograph is gone because everything that you print today is not even on paper it's on like a plastic substrate and so it's not really good paper is not good stuff to print on and so what? Yellows over time and it's just it's not great and so there's very few archival photographic processes today you khun send it away too there's some expensive places you can send print it's to be printed on fiber paper digital prints on fiber paper but they're very expensive to produce because no one prints on them because we live in kind of a diss opposable society now and so if you want archival prince you use ink jet yeah source for that but the fine archival I think you know I don't remember the name of it but if you search archival uh uh fiber based printer for digital images or something like that there's like two of them that will come up in the in the world that I know of and so those are the ones to go to. But the ink jet cannon and absent are are your best options. I constantly see people that are, you know, coming to me with prince that are made on like hp printers and stuff like that and they've got it's such a weird paper that they print on its got a weird back tio just never looks very good, but the absent and cannon both make really great printers. So either one of those air great to use and then I would try and get one that is a, um like if you're using epson called k three or above ng so it's like it's it's basically their archival ink systems so using archival ing system and get as many inks as you can if you get one that has like a well well of ink that's all together that's a bad printer you khun tell you the quality of your printer based on how how many inks they separated out into the more inks, the better that printer is for its class and so if you see a lot of ink senate it's better than the ones with few ings um and then just look for archival links those of the ones that you want, so get a get a printer that runs archival inks and then get archival paper and they are all the printer companies make archival ink jet papers so get some of those and print your stuff on a really great paper and then it'll last through a long time as long as you using archival tapes and and papers and stuff your scrapbook you ought to have archival inks and you want to have our chi vel paper as well, so I think that's something that you should look into as kind of the next step rather than printing, you know, non archival stuff from the local photo printer, a lynx like it cost. I mean, at office depot, yeah, yeah, they're they're just normal things. They're sold everywhere, but they're just absence, like the printer prints with archival ink. So you're higher and six hundred dollars epps and printers and stuff like that, they will print with archival inks. So I think I think our printer is, like maybe an eight hundred dollar printer of seven hundred dollar printer or something like that. And I got it on sale for six. Fifty or something like that. And it's got archival inks and and it prints on beautiful paper. And how much do you go through in a scrap booking? You can go there a lot. A lot of ink, but it's uh, you know, I mean, you could also printed it a printer and you pay for the paper and the the chemicals and stuff like that. So it's the same price when you go on calculated all out, it ends up being that it's the same that's. The nature of a capitalist society is that your prices are always the same no matter what you do. And that's why they they gravitate towards that all prices equal out in the end they just they do so um it's the same as if I were to buy a digital camera or a film camera I'll pay more for the digital camera I'll pay less for the film camera but I'll pay more for the film so in the end I the same price for my husband's that we needed well everybody needs a printer but it's a question of how badly do you need the printer but as a scrapbook or as a photographer it's always good to have a really nice printer s o that you could do that in house you can see the color come out and like I said at the very bottom of this printer dialog box there's the print adjustments and you should before you make your preset you should go ahead and print out some test prints and tweak that print adjustment until it works perfectly for your print and then lock it in with the template so that from then on out when you hit print it looks just like what you saw on your screen okay so that is the my advice for you when you're printing out to do physical scrapbooks um still everything you do in light room is important all of your key worrying all of your organizational structures are important all the developing is important everything about that is important um it's just that instead of making a book through a bookmaking software like the bookmaking the book module here you're just simply your hand making that book but everything else is just a cz important inside of light room all right um so we are going to turn it over to some q and a here for a little bit so if you have some questions that orb burning it is time to ask those and let's get those out of the way yes, absolutely so let's see, we've got a number of questions coming in we'll start with this one we'll try to get to as many as we can regarding the slide show this question comes from newbie and they say can you have for instance in your example audio of trade jin's mom talking? But instead of showing the mom you show photos instead it's essentially creating like a voiceover having her audio but showing photos of something else I wish ok, that was the case but no that's not the case light room is the slideshow module at this point is a little more simplistic than that, however, if you are a light room slash photoshopped user photo shop itself can create videos so there is a whole video editing software component now inside a photo shop so you don't need to have premiere you don't need to have some intensive software editing system, so if you're familiar with photo shop you can open up your videos inside a photo shop, and instead of placing them in a timeline like you would in a in a video editing software, you place them in layers so each new video or each new piece of sound or each new photo is in a layer and then there's a timeline and you open up the timeline window. Place them where you want them and that's when you can start doing sound overlays and stuff like that. So again, you could do most of the work to your video inside of light room. Cut it because it's easier cut a video in light room that is to cut it in a photo shop, cut it and do all of your work inside of light room and then save that video out, open it in photo shop and then put your audio wherever it is you want it to be, and you can then put your your video arming your, uh, your music over the top of that, and all of that could be done inside of photo shop. So if you're if you're a c c, a subscriber created cloud subscriber, you could have light room and photo shop and you have everything you need to create some pretty amazing stuff the videos that you could make in photo shop are top notch. Well, that we actually have ah, question that's about photoshopped as well. So maybe this will relate. But this question they ask, what is the best way to export a photo that you've edited in light room? But you need to make additional edits in photo shop. So from the print module, I only see the option to print straight to a printer or as a j peg. I would rather save it as a psd until my final edits are completed. Great question, right? I love that question. So let's do that let's, take this photograph of trade, gin and let's work on it and photoshopped. So I'm gonna this is the photos. This is the photo we worked on. We adjusted it, we made it black and white inside of light room. We did everything wanted. Teo, I'm gonna zoom in and just check on it looks great. So now I'm going to right click it. I'm gonna edit in and I'm gonna open it in photo shop so I open it up and photoshopped photo shops going to right now it's making a copy of it it's opening in photo shop and now I have photo shop opening and it's gonna open but you see out it took a while to do that the reason it took a while to do that is because photoshopped had teo light room had to make a copy of it for photo shop send photo shop open photo shop and then open it within photoshopped but it's there and so now at this point I can take my I always work with a tablet when I'm doing stuff like this but um let's see all right? So I'm gonna zoom in on him and I can look and you know there's not a lot of need to do a lot of editing on children because they have such great skin but you know if I want to get rid of cem his blemishes here so I'm done once I've done my retouching in here, all I need do is hit command w fur clothes and it's going to ask me do I want to save it? Absolutely I want to save it and it's saving now now it's closed it and go backto light room and now I've got if I if I go into the grid I've got here is a tiff or a psd r j peg or whatever it is you wanted to edit and here is the original rob see how I stack them on top of each other so they're not going to lose they're not going to get lost if I go into this file it means zoom in here so you can see this if I click on the one of two, it closes the stack, so now I only get to see the top if I click on that little to see how it is like a stack of photos, click on it, it opens the stack so that I can see the edited version or the unedited version, and it will always keep them together in a nice neat pile so that I can work on him later if you're going to export those now because I'm in this, so I've done my retouching and now I'm in export um does j pegs and sent him off to a printer at that point, what I want to do is I want to close all my stacks so that when I highlight everything, anything that's got a stack on ly the top of the stack is going to be sent out, the bottom is ignored if you were open the stack and highlight all your images now sends both out your retouched and your un retouched image. All right, so very simple to do that. Now if I am in a position where I'm going to be working on twenty files now, I don't wanna wait for photo shop to open it up every single time I'm like a keep waiting for it to build a new photo shop building info shop so that right click is a very in annoying way toe work so the other way that you could do this is you can highlight the images that you want to edit you can go into your export dialog box right here or shift command e and when you do it you're going to I'm just clicking on a pre set because I've got already everything's already set but if you look at it says that we're gonna put the image in the same folder is the original and we're gonna add it back to the catalogue and we're gonna stack it above the original fee that what that does is now light room while I walk away and go get a drink or I get you know cem cem candy to eat or whatever as I do that it's going to be exporting a bunch of photoshopped documents to photo shop once it exports it's going toe then bring them back and put them back in the light room it's going to stack him above the original and then later on when I feel like I want to just come back and work on him now I just right click and edit and photoshopping it opens right out there's no wait time so now I can edit in and in and in and just at all of the images just quickly and it opens up closes open up close open up close and so that's a much faster way to do it but the easy way onda simple way to just work on one by one is simply to click on it right? Click the image at it in photo shop or any other you can see that I've got a lot of different options here where I can edit in something else so you could add it in anything including there's a there's some pretty cool like plug in software is out there that will work on your image is a cz well so you don't necessarily need a photo shop on dh one of those is snap seed, which has made it was made by nick software um before google bought nick software and snap seat is no longer available but it's a super cool little program it's like the easiest way to work on photos ever it's all very um it's almost like working on your instagram but on your computer it's like boom boom boom it's done so snap seeds really awesome on the computer um but anyway so you can you can add it in any thing, not just in for a shock. All right, all right. Let's see now when we have another question here from michelle k and they say is it possible to make a photo collage in the light room print module with a transparent background so I could take it into photoshopped toe layer it with digital scrapbook elements that's an interesting question um, so michelle, I don't think that's the way we want to go, but here's, what I would do, um, and I would say that this would be a good way to go, I would go into your library, and I would choose the images that you're interested in working with, and I would take those images right, click them, and then I would go on edit in, but instead of editing and photo shop up here, I would come down to the bottom and say, open is layers in photo shop and and do that it'll take all of the images that you're interested in putting him into a digital layout, and it will open them in layers ready for you to use, and then you can simply open up whatever and quite frankly, if you have some kind of a let's say you have a texture, so if I'm also looking at textures so there's my eye, I could get my book textures and say, I want this to be on the the background. I can click on that one, too, and if I write, click this and I opened them at it in as layers and photo shop now, I'm opening up four files that are gonna be on the document, and I'm opening up the background there's the background that's opening up in photo shop and nowthe layers are going to be placed and then I can start placing them inside of so if you if you think of light room as the repository or the bookshelf for the you know you're you're storage facility for all of your templates and all of your backgrounds and all of your elements then you could just say okay I want to and you could collect them into collections and just say okay, I'm making a collection for you know my son's birthday book and then you would just go through and collect the images that you want for the book and then say ok, these are the elements even if it's a button off if it's a photograph of a button that you're using to place you know it's a png or something so it's kind of has clear you know then fine dragged the button you could have a whole series of buttons inside of light room in a folder called buttons and one called ribbons and one called you know, paper textures and you could just drag those in and say these are the elements that I'm interested in using highlight the pictures that you want for that page and the elements you want to use open them as layers and photo shop and now I have my layers set up here so if I if I go too my layer hell here down here so you can see I've got my layers all set up right there and here's the background, but if I turn all this off, there's the background and let me just move this, let me just move this background around, say, take this and because it's blurry that's a really cool background, but it looks like I was painting it doesn't, but no, it was just ice um, so I'm gonna hit command tea to change the size of this and look, I'm stretching it, but it doesn't matter because it is simply a it's simply, uh, blurry background anyway, so it's not like it matters if I stretch it hit enter so now I've got my background for the page now going to turn this one on and I'm going to hold the shift key down and re size this one here and put it there and then once I hit enter now I can go into that layer double, click it here and start adding, you know, drop shadows and strokes and whatever I want to the side, so if I want to stroke the edge of it and I want to put a devil on it or anything that I want to do, um, but you could do that with all your elements to so if you have frame elements a lot of people have frame elements in their scrapbooks and they put him over the top of things that's great just put all of your frames inside of light room you could just scan through, find the frame you want and then add that to the selection when you open a mall in layers in all of your layers will just be piled on top of each other and you could just start moving them around that's the way I would do that but because like in the print module you could kind of make a template of how you like that pictures positioned could you save that other than have your pictures is there an easy way to take say that print you had that print? Oh yeah. Photo shop and then just idea absolutely. So if you hear zaheer that good very smart see together we come up with an amazing concept okay, so you could do that you could say ok, I want to go through in the print module and I want to make a layout and I always like this certainly out that's like but then I need to put something behind it and I need to do some set. Yeah, so set up your layout so let's just say that your layout is something like that so now what I could do is I could say okay, I'm gonna print this to file so I'm pretty fine just put on the desktop as, uh test and it saved its printing out that file what I'm going to get is a white page with all these photographs on top of it then when I come into um photoshopped guys in photoshopped file open let's go to that tess j peg open that up once you open up that in photoshopped very easy then to select your white paper so where's my selection tool here are you there? I've selected that at it clear and now I can put something well right now it's a background so let's get rid of the background and then let's edit clear so now I can put whatever I want behind it so that that's a good way to go to it would just it just the extra step is I need to then e get rid of the white, but as long as it's you could always have a steady right so you would always have yeah, you could just you could design your scrap of where I want the photos toe layout here, but I haven't quite uh, but I'm going to build it up in photo shop or or even better I want the photos to be here and I'm going to do a physical scrapbook and I'm gonna build stuff on top of it that would be kind of cool you know, so you have a twelve by twelve printed page with the photographs where they're going to be, and now you have to design all the cuttings stuff around it. That would be an interesting way to design a scrapbook, too. So, yeah, so you could you could do that as well. Yeah, there we go. Thank you. That was a good job. I'm impressive thinking that's good.
