Type On A Path

The next thing we're gonna do is talk about type on a path. So sometimes we want to put type on a path, and that could be a number of things. We'll learn more about paths when we talk about vectors, but in this case, we just are going to make a circular paths and put some type on it. And we're going to do that using the shape, tools, the shape, tool, family as well. Learn more about in the next section. The shape tool family is the letter. You and I just want the Ellipse tool right here. So I'll click to select that, and I don't want it to operate as a shape tool. I wanted to just operate as a path. So up in the options bar, I'm gonna choose PATH, and we'll talk more about this in detail later. But right now I'm just going to click and not do that. That's not the tool I wanted. The Ellipse tool. That's what I want. There we are. Okay, so now I'm going to click and drag and I'm just drawing out. I'm holding shift to get a perfect circle, and I'm just gonna drag the circle around the mug...

. And this circle that we see is where the type will set. So when I'm happy with where that is, all let go, Okay? The circles not gonna print it's just a path, and we'll learn more what that is later for. Right now, what I can do is grab my type tool. And the fun that we're gonna be using is, uh, Coats, so I'll just type it out first. Since I know it's easier this way, we'll type codes. It's gonna be 13 points is gonna be centered. And I think it's going to be black because that sounds good. And I'll put my cursor right here. And look what happens when I take my book cursor and I get it near the path it turns into a spying with a squiggle that lets me know Aiken type on the circle. So I'm gonna click to put my cursor here. And, man, it looks like it has a baseline shift again. It does co. This will, like, follows me everywhere now. All right. So I fixed that I've also centered my type, and now I'm going to type a really silly poem that says roses are red. Mornings are hard. I suck at poetry and then on the bottom of the circle will write coffee. I wish I could take credit for that, but, um, I didn't I didn't write that. All right, So I'm happy with this. I am going to click. OK, now I am gonna put my cursor down here, and it's not letting me put it on the type on the circle again because it already has this. So what I have to do is actually de select this type player by Commander Control, clicking on it. And then I'm going to go to my path panel, which is where that circle lives, and I'll click to select it again. Okay, so I d selected this type player, went to the path panel and re selected the circle because I'm gonna put a second layer of type on the same circle. So now with my type tool, all position my cursor at the bottom of the circle and I'll get again that swishy character or cursor and I'll click with centered type again. And this time we're going to use mobile change the font. Any minute now, we'll just type the word coffee and then all highlight that and change it to this fund called Ive with EV lifts. Not sure have live regular, and I'm going to make it quite a bit larger. So maybe, like there now, the issue that we're having is it's upside down, all right? And that happens because the Texas on the circle and its world all the way around. So to flip it, we need to do two things. One, we switch tools and we get this Black Path selection tool right here. So the family is the A family. There's two tools the Black Path selection tool and the white direct selection tool. In this case, we went the black one. And then if you look right here, you see this little note in the center of my type. I'm not gonna lie to you. This is a squirrely pain. Sometimes I'm gonna grab this little node and just drag up, and I just flipped it up. And if I swoop it to the left or swoop it to the right, I can realign the type. But all I did with it was click on it and drag it straight up to flip the type into the circle. Last but not least, I will switch back to my type tool click to put my cursor inside and, uh, press commander control aid to select all of that. And now, to get it back outside the circle, we need to adjust the baseline. So I'll open up that character panel again. And right over here this thing that keeps pestering me I'm going to drag it down, Teoh Negative than you 40. I don't know, 50 something like that. So that's taking the type and pulling it down from village, the path so that it sits on the bottom. And now I can close all of this mumbo jumbo. Hide that path and we have a finished piece with type on a path that is a little bit squarely and I'm not gonna lie. Um, type on a path is the hardest type of past the hardest type of type on a path to dio because it goes around and then it turns upside down on the bottom. So you have to do them separately. You have to flip it. That's why I showed you this, cause it's just kind of a nightmare but just know that when you use the black or white arrows here, that's how you manipulate, not the white. You want to use the black one. That's how you manipulate the type on the circle, and I have found the easiest way to do it is to place the type with center alignment because it just works out better. And since there's no edge, there's no left a line anyway. So I would always work in centered alignment. Um, at least when you first put the type out. So the other thing I was going to show you is, um this cool effect, which is just a interesting I just wanted to teach people, Really, What vectors are by showing you what they're not with will hopefully make sense in a minute. So here we have this graphic and we have a type player. So we see that it's a type player because there's a tea right here, so I could put my cursor in here and change this if I need to. What we want to do is create a cast shadow coming from this, so I want to make it look like these letters are actually standing in the street and that the sun, which is behind them, should be casting a shadow in front. So we've seen that there's a button to make a drop shadow, but it casts shadow is a whole other beast. A drop shadow is when two things are parallel to each other. A cast shadow is when the thing is perpendicular. So it's standing up and casting a shadow, like when you walk down the street. That's a cast shadow. So that's what we're gonna create. And we're gonna do that by duplicating the type player. So oppress Commander Control J to make a copy of it. And I'll rename the copy shadow so that it's easy to follow along here. So I've made the shadow copy. Nothing changes in the image. What I need to dio is turn the shadow upside down right, because the letters would be upside down. So I'm gonna press commander controlled t to bring up this box. The transform all come control or right click and choose Flip vertical. And now if I dragged this down, we see we have a copy and it slipped vertically, and then we're like, That's pretty awesome. That's looking pretty good. Yeah, You say that again. Yes. So we duplicated the type player. Then we pressed Commander Control T to bring up free transform. Then you right, click or control click and choose flip vertically. So right clicking or control clicking brings up the transform sub menu. I guess it's called and then you could choose Flip vertical, and that just takes the whole layer and flips it upside down. Then I use the move tool. Or actually, you can just click here and drag this to drag it downward. So it's at the bottom of the letters now. The rial thing that needs to happen to complete this illusion is we need to add some perspective to the shadow because this is not right. But if I right click in here and I try to choose distort or perspective, they are not accessible to me. The reason is that this layer is still type so technically, even if I commit this, I can put my cursor in here and I could type upside down, and I guess it's not backwards. It's just upside down. But I could type upside down in here because it's still creditable text and in order for Photoshopped to make the perspective distortion that we're going to make, we need to not have vector edit herbal text we need just like good old pixels. So we're gonna convert this in the layers panel we're going to right, click or control. Click just on the shadow layer here and shoes Rast arise type Rast arises a fancy sounding word that just turns the type into pixels. So you'll notice we lost our tea so we don't have a t anymore because this is no longer type. It's pixels laying around in the shape of letters. What was the name again? Rest pasteurized restaurants. So we'll talk more about Raster and Vector in the next lecture. But the nets segment But, um, raster is a fancy word that just means, like made of pixels. So photographs are raster. Text is vector, but we've converted this now. So now this is pixels. Which means if I grabbed my eraser tool, I could, like, erase it just like it's a picture. It's just pixels, but the other thing it means is that I can't edit it anymore. Like if I want to change the font or change, maybe instead of sunset. I want to say sunrise. I can't change it anymore. But that's okay. We could easily recreated if we need to. But now that I've converted it, I can. Commander Control, I compress Commander Control T again for free transform. Now I can right click. And now I'm just going to choose Distort because I can do it how I want this way And then I can grab this corner and it needs to fan out like this and I can grab this corner and it needs to fan out like that. So those shadows need to be pointing back at the light source, which is the sun. So I don't know if that's like the exact mathematical perfect, uh, angle, but looks good to me. And when we're happy with it, we click the check mark and we'll just end it right there. But that's called the cash shadow. I guess I should say will change the blend mode to multiply. And then we could maybe, like, lower the a pass iti a smidge if we wanted, and you could blur it and a number of other. But that is a look at one creating cash shadows, but also the limitations of text at some point. So some things you would try to do to text filtering it or distorting it. At some point you may have to turn it into pixels, and so you would lose your ability to edit it. The rest of reception where it was said, remember, that was just right. Clicking on that type player and choosing rast arised layer on the layer in the in the layers panel. Yes, so there's a There's a whole sub menu of things you can do to your layers when you control click or right click to get to them, you might be able to do it from this menu to I never, uh, I never remembered you might be able to do. Ah, I I don't see it. Um, yeah, So when in doubt, right, click or control click, you'll be surprised what you can fight. All right, cook quick question for you. This is coming from from smurfy is that once you restoration fund A my next 20 restaurants, the Texas, if it's becoming kind of like some other kind of image or object, if you wanted to say flip that car there. Is that the same. The car with theology the car would like if I were to select one of these cars and flipped them? Yeah, that would be they are made of pixels, so I could just flip it. That's fine. Obviously you have to go through the selection process. Yes, you have to do all of that. But the text was just limited in that we could transform it like we could scale it and we could flip it vertically and everything. But what we couldn't do to a vector graphic was distorted. So because I specifically wanted to distort it, I had to convert it. So you may or may not run into that. And for some things that you want to dio, you can convert it to a smart object. We'll talk about that later.
