Skills To Pay the Bills
Now we've gotten through all the fears right? We're not our we're over our fears we're never going to talk about them again, right? They're all gone now that's a joke obviously but now we're going to move on because we need to bring home the fact that we need to focus on the skills that we have that we like using not the stuff that we do well or maybe even went to school to do were paid a lot of money to be good at that we the ledge throw that we just hate someone coming to us and asking us for this work so I like to call this exercise this skills to pay the bills and sometimes I say it won't make you ill skills to pay the bills and here just like our vital values from yesterday is a list of common transfer ball skills and notice the add your own and your own so whatever you don't see here that you know applies to you as a skill that you could apply to know anything that you do uh write it in there is plenty of space in the workbook pages sixty one too sixty two and what we need to do ...
with this just again like our vital values is to cross out or ignore any of these skills that you know now listen carefully that you know don't apply to you and you're not interested in developing so if you know that like I don't have this skill managing I don't have the skill and I don't I don't want to have this skill it's not important to me you could cross it out, you could just ignore it you could also hone in on the skills that you do have that you enjoy using or you want to learn more about um so communicating because you know I'm not I'm not a great communicator, but I'd really like to learn more about communication critic clive is a great place for that actually to learn more about it so you would circle that even though it doesn't apply to you right now but maybe count maybe you're a counsellor and you're like, I know I'm a freaking great counsellor and I enjoy doing that it's not about loving it it's about somewhere between loving it and liking it and like tolerating it, you know a little that so uh in the studio audience you guys have different colored post it notes, because what we're gonna do is we're going to take your transfer skills and we're putting them in this matrix here this is also part of the workbook s o if you could write them down and could still write in your workbook but if you could write them down on the post it flags and use one for each of the post it flags so on of sorry post it notes so on one note your writing mentoring another note you're writing selling and another note you're right and counseling what we're going to do eventually is I kind of have a mad rush of you guys putting them all up here but I'm going to call on one of you first to kind of do that separately and then for you guys at home uh you're going to put it into this matrix that's on page sixty three of your workbook that looks just like this so while you're pinpointing your skills I'll just take you through this is my skills to pay the bills this is my example and I actually took I think every transferable skill that was on that that sheet this is another way you could do it you can take every skill and just figure out where it fed right? So this is amaze balls this is something I super enjoy this is something if you don't want to use the word passion you could use the word big like this is something that I find thoroughly enjoyable and I could own the facts we need to bring our egos in here I could own the fact that I'm awesome at these things I'm awesome at coaching and this is amaze balls relationship building singing performing motivating myself I will not wake up in the morning and sit on the couch all day and watch soap operas uh acting motivating others I know that's like my super power and problem solving I'm okay these are the things that I'm like all right, I'm not you know I'm not super great at this but I'm okay but I really enjoy these things there's room for improvement more in the stuff playing the ukulele public speaking communicating dancing decision making delegating, summarizing what I hear uh teaching and writing and there's nothing that I like thoroughly enjoy or think I'm going to thoroughly enjoyed that I wanna I work on at this point in my life this is awesome and I'm awesome so this is like this is enthusiasm level and this isthe skill level we could think of it that way that probably would be helpful for me to put so handling clients usually is pretty awesome and I'm awesome at it and I enjoy the exchange I have with my client's whether in a session or over email or anything like that collaboration it's awesome and I'm awesome at it and just like anything it probably sometimes some of these like it depends on the person right depends on the situation s o as long as I'm collaborating with the right person auras long as my client is the right type of person and ninety five percent of the time they are then I'm awesome and this is awesome I'm okay there's room for improved that and this is awesome I enjoy it at assessing things at conceptualizing, at improvising and at interviewing, and I love people that are like innovators that could come up with, like, brand new ways of doing things are brand new ideas. Um, and I admire that so much, but that's, not something that I see myself as being a skill set that I have at this point, this is cool, okay, now we're getting to the part of the chart were honestly, like, I could care less about, so if you have nothing, and these two unused three rows, then that's totally fine. What we care about more are the top two rows, but here is, you know, this is cool, like the enthusiasm level has gone down a notch, I'm still really good at this, but I don't necessarily want to be doing it, so, like expediting things, implementing things, teamwork, I probably should've put management, they're like, yeah, I'm good at that stuff, but I don't necessarily hunt and deal, and I'm happy to pass it off to people. This is also actually in these two rows, these air good ways for you to know what you want to be delegating, and the future is someone asked about that yesterday, like, how do you take that that's step to hire someone else and like give over control of certain things and having this chart and focusing on these are things I don't like doing that's going to be an easier thing for you to let go of because you're not going to miss it um so I'm okay and this is cool working with computers, brainstorming, evaluating, organizing, persuading, planning, strategizing usually all things that I kind of need help with that I'm good enough at but I need help with and I enjoyed at certain points, but it's not I don't want become like a professional brainstorm or anything like that, and the mentoring is something that is interesting to me, but I haven't had a chance to do it, and, uh so I'm not good at it yet, but I'm I think it's I think it's cool this is week, these air now we're getting to like the lowest levels of enthusiasm thankfully there's nothing that I'm awesome at that I feel is weak. Uh, I'm ok at budgeting, managing, researching and selling, but I don't really like doing those things, and I'm really awesome at multi tasking, but I hate multitasking, I wantto be a person that, like, does one thing at a time, so I kind of I know I do that well, but I don't like that I do that well and, uh I'm not good at this yet and I think it stinks proof reading and editing like I have no interest in proof reading I have no interest in editing er and so you know I'm able to move on with that and own it so here is the blank skills so you know again at home these days talk to rose are like our gold here in order to figure out our skills what we have really enjoy using and again it's not on ly the here and now but it's your admiration sze in your aspirations so there's room for all of that in this chart eso at home in the workbook hopefully which you have you're going to be using that common skills lists and adding in your own putting things in the chart wherever they're supposed to go in that box we would love for you to upload like take a picture of your chart or if you have the workbook and it's printed out, scan it at home um uploaded teo what's that link called again j k o client student work student look sue network that would be great so we could see your skills to pay the bills and we love to hear you in the chat tell us like tell us what's in this box tell us what's in the I'm awesome this is a maze falls box and if there's nothing there I'm calling crap balls bull crap on you uh because you're not giving yourself enough credit so again like we're we're really owning our ego and owning what we're good at doing and we're being proud of it and we're sharing it and we're all in the same boat so don't think that anyone is going to like this person such a jerk for saying she's good at whatever we want to hear it and that's what I love to hear in the chat what are you awesome at and think is amaze balls um and I would love to have one of our studio audience members just come on up here and kind of put you r post its on the applicable box day syria at the ready ok now I don't know who have their their stuff nicole you have some stuff fair I have a couple what you have you have I'm on about putting you on the spot again so mean of me house our house our favorite boyfriend michael really wonderful good so tell us what you have and where you're putting it okay so this is a little difficult to kind of go through so this might be like just the first round okay, wait I should use that hold on I should say this right gut reactions our best friends okay so I know that we could torture ourselves by looking at every skill and being like you know and the way yes you're analyzing we're over thinking like I hear you I hear you I hear you so please gut reactions that's nine times out of ten the right answers our gut reaction so do it like quick okay quick okay so problem solving brother sal bang fabulous um training was I'm okay but that could be really really fun awesome motivating self okay researching okay um organizing fabulous I love it you were owning this crap I love it on observing name of staring listening which we heard I mean we heard all these things for michael yesterday to so on and then I got some I'm okay so dancing huh? Writing is I'm not so good bye I think you'd be really, really awesome savvy lies like speaking not so good but it again huh? Okay motivating others ok I have persuading which I'm not so good at I'm creating not so good okay cooking hey love it thank you like that's amazing anywhere down here yeah that's ok but look at all this stuff that we have already right and again just like the gut reactions or what we want there is no right or wrong like but I have everything in this row and I have nothing over here and there's nothing in this box and is that okay? The only thing that's not okay if there's nothing here because then you're not selling yourself short yes, thank you so much arrest anyone else want to come on up and danny okay, so tell us what you're going through we're gonna start with my favorite crow shane yeah owning and general crafting okay working with computers think lives somewhere in here uh I got it I got it no more crafting um generally proof reading and editing I'm probably awesome at it but I'm not you don't uh motivating others live somewhere in here okay teaching here great I want to but I'm not good at it okay? Selling we'll live somewhere down okay working with kids I'm pretty awesome at it. Uh lovett layout and design yeah. Here. Well, you know, I heard something in your voice working with children are you sure belongs here and not here. Yeah, I don't know it might it might be really awesome at it maybe where do we maybe we're putting it like right on the line you have a feeling that you are amaze balls amaze ball stacey at it nine gotta get it up we've got to get it up um I like this so that I could live right on the edge of it and then interviewing like as in interviewing journalistically, huh think we'll live here hey, an event in project organizing I like doing it I'm just not perfect okay, thank you uco you know for you guys that came up here is there anything that I don't know it's kind of surprising for you anything that you I know I said gut reactions and you did this pretty quickly anything that felt more of a struggle as like where do I put this? And is it important? No, this is good. Yeah, I have I don't know I'm sort of one of those people I have trouble saying I'm great at everything or so it's hard to welcome to the club. Yeah, yes, this is this is hard, right? This is hard because we're owning what we're good at it's a really hard thing to it's difficult to the things that you've studied and that you definitely know how to do but you just don't have any interest in it it's hard to kind of let that thing go like there's plenty of proof reading that I've done professionally, but I don't want to do that. You see on then I'm so glad you brought that up and I think paula kind of brought that up to and in a different way that, you know, she knows that eventually she doesn't want to be a project manager for a corporation or for anyone else, but she could use that in her own goals and she could use that skill within our own life coaching business or within her own retreats that I know she's gonna plan within our own business so it's like your leg proof reading okay, you know you don't want to be hired to do proof reading but the fact that you have that as a skill is going to help your business in your block post in the books that you offer in the copy for your crush a patterns and for your product so yeah, we could hopefully reconcile things you know, some things we're just gonna be like I never want to do this again I don't want to make it a part of anything but is having that skill I know my background as a performer leads me to a rocket here a creative lives and so ok, I'm not on broadway and I'm not acting in that way except for when I when I do my one woman show but I could say this brought me here into public speaking and teaching in this sort of play with the cameras, which like so I love it so actually I would love to kind of have a mad dash a mad dash um and if you guys just even just like a lineup right here everyone who hasn't put stuff up yet or if nicole you're still writing stuff to add I started a need that I look like I'm awesome at everything but e in order no, I love it and that's okay, right? We're owning this and that why I used to do this exercise of my client to be like you have to take every single transferable skill that's a listed and find a place for it in the box, but I know that it takes forever and honestly, like, who cares about this stuff? We don't care, so unless you're looking for things to delegate, this doesn't matter, but I think sometimes we resonate with the sea skill or we feel like we have it and it's not until we go to put it in the box that we go, I really don't like this and sometimes it's important for us to see that proof reading that we have our maybe our education in our experience and you know that that's a skill you need to include somewhere and you're realizing, oh, this loose here like that could be really good ah ha! Moment for us. So, joanna, you at the ready? Sure. Okay, let's say that you got a travel planning, huh? It's awesome. Then I'm okay. I'd like, actually, I'd like to get better. Okay, awesome. Uh, researching hot well, another researching it's it's awesome. And actually, I'm good at it. Good, like the way she did that right working with children it's cool and and I'm I'm good at it fabulous, uh, mentoring I'm really good at well screaming no no no that's okay, I think with all the stickies it's hard to get a project management I'm really good at yeah I'm really good at it like that uh expediting is awesome and andi I'm awesome creating through the middle uh that's okay here under their photography yes it's amaze balls and I'm awesome working with numbers yeah okay. Thank you. Um jasmine who you look like you're at the ready I am ready ok, right and then I just have to add tio okay building a web presence yes. See, I'm very good organization I love that and who would be ready to go after jasmine okay, janet, do you mind if I just like being on that being on deck that's a baseball term right that's for daniel hi, daniel. I use a baseball term. Okay, great. So this is amaze balls. I have strategy and logic fabulous as well as styling and then for my I'm okay and actually this is this is awesome still, uh, this is awesome making people happy and building confidence and really good at that lovett um mentor e same thing kind of kind of idea and empathy I think these are all really important and anything we knew um this is cool I have writing marketing text I'm pretty awesome at it okay working with computers uh and then uh this is weak and it's what I've been doing for the last fourteen years customer support I e could use in your own potential styling business right that's why I didn't put all the way down you can delegate it to an actual company or person right robitaille and then multitasking same thing here is you right like I don't want to be good at it so what yeah let's see oh also sorry I have uh this one time I'm patient having patients okay okay and then for I'm okay I have this is awesome is delegating uh I do like delegating but I'm not very good at it building a web presence uh money at it I think that one is amaze balls but I'm only okay at it eh getting my head on paper as well what I have this one for I'm not good and this socks and negotiation here we'll let that go and then innovation implement hey shin I love innovating but I'm not really good at it yet and then finally just marketing myself I would say this is cool us okay at it thank you did you see how these all work together like especially this column here, right? So jasmine styling and strategy, logic and the fee I mean that's involved in working with styling clients or doing a shoot or something mentoring you could do teaching mentoring consultation stuff if you want teo happy and building confidence it's what she'll give her clients if you decided to styling working with computers you could build your business online writing marketing text would all play in like it all works together on then it seems like you know oh, I want some more education doesn't have to be like you know what a traditional building a web presence brain story maybe you know, maybe you know where you need help is like someone to help you brainstorm get your thoughts together you need that sort of health and you know that's why you're hiring I love how this is all working together they you okay? Ms dana mostly stuff with the ones on the sheet and fabulous which was not creative, which I think I put in here that's okay? And we could always you have the workbook forever and ever but you could go home tonight and do it and then make your boyfriend's tio uh okay, so I put I'm kind of like coded them from I love it so I love but I don't really I'm not passionate about um sometimes strategizing if it's a boring subject right there's a condition right? You could even put strategizing boring subjects michael one place and strategizing boring subject I think it's because it's it's no longer a challenge like something I'm just used to doing day today okay um so handling clients I haven't done that too much personally so it's cool I'd like tio learn more about it great go somewhere over there perfect analyzing I love um budgets again I can do it but I wouldn't want to do it full time. Okay um uh right okay um organizing I love oh great conceptualizing of dancing I love but I can do it in the privacy oh, right ok acting I've tried improv interest me but tom I'm not going to do that again on brainstorming I left god you love it love it, jeffrey ready? Okay. And then who else knew colin casey okay, guys right jen to okay, great. Okay, I feel like I have them all over the place so I'm not gonna be organizing as a string is that okay? Okay, so public speaking I think it's awesome, but I don't think I'm good at it yet, okay um okay. So analyzing reach lurching, evaluating, assessing fabulous they all go in the same backs and super g like right? Yeah, great. Alright, when I want to just highlight that word easy, right? So that word easy I think sometimes, um we discount the things that we find easy and I don't mean it as easy is like this is a bri I could do this in my sleep but things that give you a sense of these are usually things that you're naturally good at and are usually than the things that you discount the most so notice when you feel that ease and no that's what we want to bring into our dream careers in a big way thank you for bringing that up inadvertently yeah and then um creating connecting motivating other I'm gonna go ok I hope I'm really good at it I love it but I don't know you know that that's your focus of the efforts we won't use that but that's where you know probably you want to spend a little bit more time on you yes and then same thing with you know I'm loving the coaching mentoring stuff but I don't have a lot of experience yet but hazing value amaze amaze balls amaze balls amaze balls stacy e and I mean I don't know I could keep going okay this is great this is great thank you thank you thank you in the interest of time jan come on up yes let's do it like let's do it like like a rapid fire rapid fire thisyou have it all I do so I guess that I didn't even put organization is okay amaze balls and I'm okay writing connecting and listening okay this's going on feedback tio okay we could use everything damp down here so far to fill this out okay so I'm okay and this is amaze balls I would it's a tribute to oh good at this decisionmaking handling clients delegating and selling okay charlie can do that okay so not so good just to move quickly this's weak but want to work on it conceptualizing working with deadlines and budget uh huh okay and then this is awesome and I'm okay at it working with people in transition photography brainstorming and diet nutrition changes right pretty good at that and this one or somewhere around here right okay around here oh use that choice public speaking travel working with seniors fabulous thank you. I love this and you know it makes me think that we could even actually do this as like an approval matrix sort of thing I'm a subscribers to new york magazine and I always look at the approval matrix on the back so you could even like put the skills closer to the lines where you know you know that they live teo even kind of I don't know prioritize that whatever a little gray area exactly exactly cc oh last one at least write everyone else ok great. I just have a few go crazy all right and go crazy I think writing is really important and I'm okay at it huh? Singing I big season singing is amaze balls I'm okay at it we're gonna go to charlie okay it's all right teaching I am pretty awesome and it's important to me so that problem solving same cooking means you mean like like eat don't could multi tasking is something that I think is really important but I'm just okay I don't like to get better and then selling things saying I think it's important for my business dancing fame uh because really important I mean gardening is something I really want to do but I'm not good at it all I just kills random things great I love it thank you so much and I think that I've been talking about how semantics are important here and I heard you say this is important important important important so that was really interesting and I think that could be another way of figuring out where things go and you could even if you wanted to kind of do this again on cross out amazing is that this is really important this is super important this is the most important this's slightly important this is important this is not important this is the least important like if you wanted to kind of do it again in that way that's a really good way to tap into your values stuff I think this jasmine just curious I've noticed there's one box that's um alarmingly empty yes what what's your take on that uh you know this interesting is that the box that I didn't know I had that empty to um would anyone notice he say I'm okay being I'm okay this and I don't I don't really like it and I'm just okay at it I mean thankfully I think that that means that there's not things that we're doing that we just like don't really care about because this is like I really don't care and this is I really care a lot so I think that's kind of the empty space here yeah, absolutely and I also think too when you cut the list down and it's not like I'm taking these thirty five transferable skills and putting all of them in the matrix you're leaving out the things that would otherwise go here yeah um and so you know again if you wanted to take that whole list and and your own and put every single one of them in the inn in the matrix then uh you know, go for it but thanks for pointing that out I don't even notice that your financial areas and maths and all that sort of book keeping a stuff of business like people saying they're very weak in that and that's something they have issues with winterbourne is saying I'm awesome amaze balls at drawing, writing, working with computers, motivating others on I'm okay in amaze balls thinking yeah, I love it when I have to do a plug for a creative life course that um I found really helpful for those of us who are not good with the numbers hands me on our finances I don't know if I'm going to say it correctly, but galya king shine did a like finance and investments and bookkeeping for creative people super super, super helpful. Um, I worked with someone on her team one on one. It was really helpful to me and my husband and helping us get things together. So if you know that's something you're not good at honestly that's the kind of thing that you can't really ignore and say like I want nor this forever, you have to either delegate that to someone or kind of set about learning it for yourself, and there are people that do you have a right brain bent to these things and could help people like us that that's, todd and amanda elizabeth is saying I'm awesome amaze balls at meeting people, encouraging others collaborating, rising to a challenge, and then I'm ok at designing, blogging, creating love it, and I love the ones people are adding, I know when people are ending, I hope that gives you guys ideas to us to what you could add love it, okay, so if we want to expand on this at all and I left space in the workbook for for you guys to do this on your own time should resonate with you come up with a story that will demonstrate you're awesome. And amaze balls skills. So if you think of like, I'm going to go into an inter, I'm gonna go into a formal interview and I'm gonna tell them I'm really great at connecting with people, and they're going to give me an example. Write down those stories that come up that showcase your awesome in amaze ball skills because honestly, it's stories that people connect with it's. Why I tell that story about dry heaving in the trash can and my verbally abusive boss over and over again, because I know that that's that's what shows my own background and what I've gone through and what I've overcome. But it also resonates with the right people to so, uh, make it make it something that will demonstrate your skills that you want to kind of show case, and you'll either use it in that sort of interview setting. Or you could use it as a block post. You could use it as part of your about page, like those stories air what? Connect us.

This class was sooo incredibly fun and inspiring. It was wonderful to meet Michelle and interact with her in person. She is warm, kind, approachable and genuinely passionate about helping creatives find a career they can love. Having been raised to believe that the only route to a secure retirement was to find a job with a pension or, at least, a good 401k, this class gave me the courage to believe that I could do work I love and still finance a fabulous life in retirement. It also put things in perspective because it helped me to see that I deserve to be happy as much as anyone else who has carved a successful niche for themselves doing work they feel good about. And, it reminded me that if I try something and discover it isn't the right fit, the worse that can happen is that I go find that job with a pension at that point. So what? Why not me? Amen! xoxo, Jen

My dad used to tell me, "You don't get to do what you love. You just learn to love what you do." For years and years, I've been wandering from job to job wondering why I just wasn't feeling the love, no matter how much I learned to be good at what I do. Although, I tried to resign myself to the idea that work would always be something to dread day in and day out, I couldn't help but day dream about the elusive "perfect" job! I searched for years for tests or counselors who could help give me some direction as to what I would be good at and just before I lost hope, I found this class. I snuck it in during work on my cellphone (shh don't tell lol) and was running back to my desk when I had to be pulled away. It's nice to know someone understands what I've been going through and Michelle's energy is just so positive and motivating that I know that I can make things happen! I watched the free live broadcast but even before the end of day 1 I knew this class was a resource I'll gladly pay for! I would and have recommended this class to many people I know feel the same way I do! Changed my life! We're not made to fit into a mold so why not create your dream career! My review in one word? Amazeballs!

I purchased this course and made sure to finish it before 2015 started. It was so easy to go through the course and I made sure to be diligent in actually doing the activities and homework. I never knew there were other MULTI-PASSIONATE out there like me! I thought I was just a confused human being who needs to figure out her life! Haha! Michelle's energy and passion to help others are so eminent in the way she presents and guides us. I love the setting of Creative Live as well because I felt involved with the studio audience despite having to watch these sessions by myself. :) I learned so much about myself, about how I can incorporate my multiple interests into a unique ball of career perfectly molded for me, by me. All thanks to the help and wisdom of Michelle's experiences and talents. What a great end of 2014 and a great way to start 2015! THIS COURSE IS WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY. :)
