Capture the Ceremony

So you see I'm at quite a low angle. I'm trying to avoid the videographer or people in the background. It's a beautiful church, but I need to show what's happening. And all the iPhones, you know, this is our biggest enemies. Ladies jumping in front of you to take the picture, you know? Come on, guys. (laughing) I'm not going asking to the priest saying can you please tell them not to use the iPhone until, because they're coming into the aisle and blocking everyone's view. So look how tight it is. So these are the tradition. I'm looking for a moment, and I'm awkward here because I'm blocking also myself, people. So all the time I'm trying to go low angle, no flash, a very level light. This here has the Tungsten light everywhere, so it's gonna create the gold and everything is gonna pop out and turn it into a great picture. And I love to take pictures of icons and things while I'm in the church so I can create a page of this into the album to show where they were and how was the church, ...

especially beautiful church like this, you know, capture it the moments. You see how low I am? And look what's happening there. You know, it's the best background, and sometimes it works against you, but then work it from a different angle. Basically I was hiding behind things to capture them and make it more interesting even using a wide lens so I can capture that ceiling and the mood, the environment, the feel of the place. That was the important moment. You know, you don't see this on the video. This is what photograph is all about. You don't see that moment on the video. The video is done, it looks set. Danny has beautiful moments also. That was falling off her head, and she was giggling. You know, so that was what I, and look the seriousness of the groom. You know, he's serious, and she's ... And basically I was really holding the camera high and capturing. Again, wide lens, so when it's away from your face you know that you're gonna get something. (laughing) Sometime I miss the head, and the bride says, can I see it? No no, not now, I'll show it to you after. (laughing) You mentioned before the sort of iPhone bombers. Do you ever ask your brides to have an unplugged ceremony, or put it in your contract? Yes, I do, I do, I do many requests with the brides. Please don't get fake tan. That's the biggest enemy for me because when she puts fake tan with the camera, it's gonna capture the fake tan, she's gonna look orange, and the groom is gonna look normal so Martian getting married with, you know, it's such a not pleasant thing. And to color correct when they have the fake tan, they become flat. And color correct, and it's not them anymore. So it's very important. I say please, sweetheart, just a bit and if you have to, not too much. And again, I instruct her lot of things, iPhones and things like that. Sometime if I see they're on, I don't push it. I suggest, but it's up to them. Then they'll see the results because this church is small, everyone is crowded. But go to a big Catholic church or a synagogue where everything is beautiful, she's walking down the aisle, I'm at the back. Even when I'm at the back I go very low so if there's videographer on the other side, won't film me, so I make sure that they don't see me. So I'm capturing this, then a guy from the back row comes right in front of me or when they're walking out, so it's a distraction, not good for the bride and groom. And capture the moments outside the church.

I am SO grateful to CreativeLive as well as Yervant for taking the time to put on this class. So many times while sitting in this class I thought to myself "what have I been thinking?!" I have so much to learn! I loved hearing about Yervant's process for creating images, but what inspired me even more was his advice on how to view, and treat yourself as a professional. I completely agree when he said photographers are creative but we are "terrible business people." But I aim to change this in my business from this point forward, thanks to this class! Yervant's advice on how to value, protect, and sell your art is priceless. I have always valued printing and creating products clients can hold, but I don't think I understood the real emotional value in it until this class. When he pulls those images we just watched him create for the last two days, off of that printer, and they are there before our eyes, I had an emotional reaction to it. I want my clients to experience the same, so I must value it and create opportunities to educate my clients. Thanks for the kick in the pants that we all needed Yervant! And I hope this will not be the last time I get to experience your education in my life. I said this many times to other students during the class, but I will say it again here, I want to carry a mini Yervant with me every where I go! Thank you Creative Live and thank you Yervant!

Yervant’s ardent love for wedding photography and capturing his brides in their best light is unquestionable. His love for this photography community and his regard for our respect in the world hierarchy is without reservation. Yervant’s willingness to share his knowledge and skill for all these things to come together is beyond generous. These are some of the things that help Yervant to effortlessly stand out as a photography master and this is exactly what this class is about… plain and simple.
