Gear, Lighting & Camera Settings

My gear on any capture on any day. So like I said, I this is my most important gears. I always have this on me, where we'll have two cameras 24-70 always, and I decide even if I want 200 or 16- or another lens, but 24-70's always in my hands. So two cameras, the most important accessory is the assistant holding the lights and holding everything. The simpler you are the better you're gonna capture. Don't have too many equipment on you, you don't need it. These days I use ISO more than aperture and speed. You know, my aperture I decide it's 2. at 103 of the second then I push ISO up and down, I'm not scared to go high. Because if it's noise, it's beautiful, that's what I've educated to my brides. Do you see the noise, isn't that beautiful they ask me, Yervant, don't forget to have noise on your pictures. (audience laughing) So, sometimes I do it, no noise to the picture. So the camera so good. So that's I push ISO, I nearly have glued my aperture and speed in what old days we couldn't do...

that because there was 400 ISO and 800 ISO. Now we have all this space, it's better, so why not use it. Traditions have to break, I told you that. Lighting is so important, I use a lot of natural light. Daylight is natural light or I use also any store light, street light, window light, anything that's lit, I will use it. Source of lighting, direction of lighting, intensity of lighting, composing in lighting. Light is what creates my pictures. So I see the light, I get excited. I see the light, I say don't move I don't care how late we are, we if at the reception, it's your wedding, you decide, let me take this picture. So I will always want to take beautiful picture then. Lighting is how I work. If I don't have light, I use portable light. I love the Profoto B2. I don't even know the brands, I know it's a Profoto and I love it. When they released this they rang me and they said Yervant, we have this amazing light do you want to try it, this was a beta, no one had used it before. I said, guys, I don't use flash. They said it's all right, you might like this. And yes, I did like it because on camera light I don't like and with this type of lighting I can control the light from any direction it's coming. The strength, the continuation because if I'm gonna go click, click, click, click, to capture a movement, if the flash doesn't catch up, I'm gonna miss things. The great thing, my assistant will hold this if you saw Denny in the other pictures, we always have it. If I don't need the flash, I can use it also the modeling light, I use it as a Tungsten light. That's amazing, years ago, we have to take two things, now I carry this. Let's assume I'm in a bar, it's warm light everywhere, it's so soft and think I just want bring a bit of catch light to the eye. Introduce the Tungsten light on a stick and I've got beautiful moody pictures. So, that's how I work. This is part of my gears now. I shoot on M, job using my friend, he came up with this, he said Joe, I'm a people professional and Yervant is M for Master. So I use M, Manual, because I'm used to that from the old days. I used to use hot block, we never had the light meter built in, and this is the best way. Let me explain you why. Camera is a robot, it sees the light capture, capture, capture. But every movement we have a black and white, a bride and a groom in a black suit. The camera, the more frame of the bride, the more the camera gonna say too light, it's gonna darken, the more of the groom, it's gonna light him because it's too dark. Because camera doesn't know if it's a light or it's a dress outfit. So when you post-prod it, although exposures are gonna do all right, but during post-production every picture is gonna look different. It's not gonna be constant, whereas I come to your face, take a picture of you, make sure that it's right, I've done my exposure, now as long as you are in that location, I'll take the whole pictures at that setting unless the light changes. So manual is the best way for me to shoot. It's always constant and I know that I'm not relying on machinery, it's me who deciding what to do. Experience also, you will say okay, I have quite good experience to say okay, this is hundred at 5.6, I will set it up and I'm quite close. But in the old days, I used to have a light meter in my hand, go to the subject, measure, measure the light. We don't need to do that because we've got the screen and it looks good behind the screen. Look at the histogram and it's right. Do the setting, keep on shooting. Then another location, do a test shot again, closeup of the face, looks good, zoom it out and do the rest of the shoot. Because the subject is always there. When we move and go in a different light source again, have pride, and always you get constant good quality of shooting. 95% of my shots are done on manual. Sometimes I do auto if it's going fast moving like outside the church they are walking. But now even that I have stopped doing automatic I prefer to do manual, so I can control the camera fully. Once you get used to it, it's the best way to shoot. Now, let me show you an album. This is Michelle, she's my niece, she's amazing fashion designer in Australia. She sells to the celebrities around the world. Michelle is a hard subject because she knows the fashion herself, she knows everything. This is my version of her life. So I shot some of the pictures at her workplace. It's about Michelle, and her husband agreed with me, that it's about Michelle, everything was about Michelle. So her album included Michelle. (soft ethereal music) ♫ (lyrics in foreign language) (upbeat romantic Latin music) ♫ (lyrics in foreign language) Okay, if you saw this album had a lot of black lines and white because that's Michelle's decoration in the house, so I followed her look. If you see, there was a comments of different fashion designers in an album of famous fashion designers. So that's how what we design. So each album needs to be individual for the liking of the bride. If you see, I have hundreds of albums in my studio A hundred is exaggerated, but a lot of albums, and you will see so many varieties so when the bride walks in, she will decide which way to go. She will, when you start connecting with her, and right album in front of her, you slow that down, and start talking about their album. That's how we work, Michelle was a hard customer because she's an expert, but she loved what I did, and that's the main thing.

I am SO grateful to CreativeLive as well as Yervant for taking the time to put on this class. So many times while sitting in this class I thought to myself "what have I been thinking?!" I have so much to learn! I loved hearing about Yervant's process for creating images, but what inspired me even more was his advice on how to view, and treat yourself as a professional. I completely agree when he said photographers are creative but we are "terrible business people." But I aim to change this in my business from this point forward, thanks to this class! Yervant's advice on how to value, protect, and sell your art is priceless. I have always valued printing and creating products clients can hold, but I don't think I understood the real emotional value in it until this class. When he pulls those images we just watched him create for the last two days, off of that printer, and they are there before our eyes, I had an emotional reaction to it. I want my clients to experience the same, so I must value it and create opportunities to educate my clients. Thanks for the kick in the pants that we all needed Yervant! And I hope this will not be the last time I get to experience your education in my life. I said this many times to other students during the class, but I will say it again here, I want to carry a mini Yervant with me every where I go! Thank you Creative Live and thank you Yervant!

Yervant’s ardent love for wedding photography and capturing his brides in their best light is unquestionable. His love for this photography community and his regard for our respect in the world hierarchy is without reservation. Yervant’s willingness to share his knowledge and skill for all these things to come together is beyond generous. These are some of the things that help Yervant to effortlessly stand out as a photography master and this is exactly what this class is about… plain and simple.
