Color Correction in Photoshop®

Let's go around her arm here. You see that, that's a little bit light. Feather 100. Feathering depends from the area you're picking and the size file, so you have to experiment with this. I'm gonna go adjust levels. Always do on your layers, and let me move this here. You see at the bottom of the levels, there's an output levels. Instead of doing the midtones, adjusting the midtones, I'm gonna do output levels, so I'm gonna add a bit of gray into the white there. So it's not too contrasting, but what happens when I add gray? She becomes gray, that area becomes gray. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna add color balance. I'm gonna, this mask I'm gonna edit the color, and now select the layer and warm it up, just a bit of red so it matches her skin tone. Okay, now if you see that, that's quite nice color, but on the left side, because of the veil and everything there, it looks a bit white and washed out. So let's do feather, 100. Again do levels. I'm showing you the shorter way so everyone ca...

n understand. Okay, again it's gray now because I added gray to the selection because there's not much detail, it's white there. Then I will go create colors. Copy my selection into that color layer. So to copy that, you click on option, click the layer and move it to the top layer. And now let's click on the color and warm it up. Okay, now her skin tone is everywhere balanced, maybe a little bit on the hand there. Feather 50. Again the same thing. Levels, a bit of gray, that's perfect and make the color balance layer. Click option and move from the bottom to the top so you have the same selection and warm her hand just a little bit so every tone is done perfectly. Now we go to her eyes. Bring it, she's got beautiful blue eyes. Select the blue area. Feather three, and make a level layers. And bring a bit of white, so you lighten up her eyes just a bit, perfect, that's it. And last thing I will do, is go to levels, and there's a very good preset in levels to bring a bit of contrast and not lose details. When you go into levels layer, on top on the preset there's increase contrast, there's three levels. I love this because it's very well done, Photoshop has done a very good setting here. So that increased the levels, so I've got beautiful contrast there, I will bring the details and that's, I'm losing a bit of details in her hair because of the contrast. So select her hair, feather 40. Let me do it again. Feather 40. And let's do another level layer. Here I'm gonna just bring her hair down. I think I've done something wrong, hit the button. But anyway, that's that. So now that I've done what I want to achieve, you see the veil has gone a little bit on the blue side. What I'm gonna do is hue saturation, so that's a new layer, with hue saturation I'm gonna, it's blue so I'm gonna select the blue cast, and with the, with the color picker I'm gonna go on the veil in some areas where it's blue, gonna select it. And then you see on the selection it's picked up all the blues, I desaturate. I desaturate and the blue drops and it becomes quite nice. Okay, I'm gonna reduce this level a little bit there. Let's go into contrast, I think contrast was too heavy, let's reduce it just there. Okay, because you have levels for each adjustment, you can go backwards and forwards to make corrections. Okay, so the last one, I'm gonna do is just a bit of color correction. Let's go into color balance and I will be adding. If you see, I work the same way you work in the darkroom, adjust the contrast and everything then add the color, so that's it. I love warm tones. If you add a bit of warm to the picture, it's more pleasant to the eye, and that's the finished picture. Let's see the before and after. Before. And after. You see how much a small difference makes? Now that's ready to print. Once I've done everything and I'm sure it's okay, I will click option, Command + Shift + E. And this creates a flat layer on top of it. It's important. So on this layer, I will add noise. I will add about four percent noise or five percent. What this does, it adds a bit of texture into it so it doesn't look plasticky. It's a film texture, I love that look. You see, let's go to the picture. You see, by adding, it gets rid of also other stuff that are not pleasant so it unifies the whole thing and that's the finished picture. Now we can print it. Let's save this, go to another picture. When I save this, one important thing, I will save it, save as jpeg. I love to save as jpeg, why do I love that? Jpeg is, the pixels on a jpeg are not perfect square. They are a bit rounded, the edges are rounded so that's a beautiful format for people. So it doesn't exaggerate the pixels, it doesn't look very pixelized, it looks more softer. So I love, before I print, it's always done into jpeg. Is there a particular reason why you do the Command + Shift + E to create a layer on top of everything instead of just flattening the image? I like to keep a Photoshop layout. So obviously I save it as a tif, so just in case I don't like what I've done, I can always go back and make adjustments. These days hard drives are so cheap, I'd much rather have a backup of what I've done. That's why I keep the layer, but I like to do a new layer flat because if I'm gonna apply a filter to it, I apply it to the whole picture. Then I flatten it, ready for printing. Let's take one of the actions. Let's run a yerevan matte on it. Click on it, this one behind I have set up in Nik software for this one to get what I want to achieve so it creates a new layer and it takes a few minutes just to give you that beautiful effect to the picture. I'm gonna show you one by one, there's all of these different actions. When you save as jpeg, where are you saving that to? Either I will save in the printing or album folder, but if it's an album, I have the tif folder and then I have the finished folder. I will save it inside the finished folder as jpeg so that will go to the album layouts. I don't apply this effect until I've done the album because I don't know which one is gonna be but which one is gonna be effects, so I applied this effect on the layers. I'm gonna show you that later on also. Okay, so this is one of the effects. Let's have a look before and after. Just gives me a softness all around. You can, and the good thing, it's a layer, you can change the opacity so you will go where you want, maybe let's add a bit of warmth to this. Color, there it is. They're very subtle, very soft. Look how beautiful the veil is, the dress, the background, it's perfect. And that will print a beautiful picture. So I'm saving at the moment in the same folder.

I am SO grateful to CreativeLive as well as Yervant for taking the time to put on this class. So many times while sitting in this class I thought to myself "what have I been thinking?!" I have so much to learn! I loved hearing about Yervant's process for creating images, but what inspired me even more was his advice on how to view, and treat yourself as a professional. I completely agree when he said photographers are creative but we are "terrible business people." But I aim to change this in my business from this point forward, thanks to this class! Yervant's advice on how to value, protect, and sell your art is priceless. I have always valued printing and creating products clients can hold, but I don't think I understood the real emotional value in it until this class. When he pulls those images we just watched him create for the last two days, off of that printer, and they are there before our eyes, I had an emotional reaction to it. I want my clients to experience the same, so I must value it and create opportunities to educate my clients. Thanks for the kick in the pants that we all needed Yervant! And I hope this will not be the last time I get to experience your education in my life. I said this many times to other students during the class, but I will say it again here, I want to carry a mini Yervant with me every where I go! Thank you Creative Live and thank you Yervant!
