Publishing Admin Companies

Hi. In this video, we're gonna talk about publishing admin companies. So what are publishing a companies? Well, they basically look after the publishing side of your business. So historically, a songwriter would sign up with a publishing company and the publishing company would just take care of all of the admin and pitch their songs to artists and, and labels and stuff like that. And then the publishing company would just collect all of that money, take care of all of that business and pay the songwriter 50%. But in this day and age, it's very common for independent artists to take care of all of that themselves, which is great because now we have publishing admin companies and these companies are basically service providers who take care of all of that stuff for you. But generally speaking, it's more for a fee as opposed to um obtaining the copyright of your songs and paying you a royalty. So in these cases, you pay a fee and you collect 100% or at least the majority of the royalties...

on the songwriting side. Now, the big D SPS, the big distributors like CD Baby and Chonco, they will have, um, they will give you the ability to opt in for their publishing admin services. And generally, that's the easiest way to do it because they register with all the, um, performing rights organizations for you, uh, collect your mechanical royalties for you as well. And just generally make sure that you are getting all the money that you are entitled to. Ok, because there's a lot of different royalty streams out there and doing it by yourself can be really, really difficult. You've got to sign up with loads of different pr os and, and organizations and you know, that's with the hope that you haven't missed any anything else. So generally speaking, you will pay a bit more um when you are using A DS P to opt in for the publishing admin stuff. But if it allows you to just get on with making music and letting someone else handle all of that, that's probably a good way to go. A couple of things that you're gonna make sure you definitely wanna opt in for though are Facebook and youtube monetization. This is really, really important cos if you do it properly, then um not only can you make a lot of money, but you can actually make a lot of money whilst gaining a lot of exposure as well. For example, if you opt in for a youtube monetization with your digital service provider, anyone who uses your music in their content will get you paid. But not only that if you set it up, right? They can freely use your music, thus distributing your music, thus sharing your music with the their followers and their subscribers on their youtube channel. But you will get at least some of the ad revenue that they make on the video. So that's kind of a win win situation there. They get to show the love of your music that they have with their followers and you get paid. So that's a good reason to sign up for uh youtube's or sign up for youtube monetization with your um company, Facebook Music, Facebook monetization. That's a really, really good thing to opt in for. Um This is something that I actually um advise artists many, many times during the week to do because I find that a lot of artists don't opt in for all of these extra things because they're, you know, they haven't budgeted for that extra cost. Um But if you, if you don't opt in for this stuff, it can actually make life more difficult for your fans to share your music and also for you to make money in the future. And this is relatively new stuff at the time of the of me recording this video, but just definitely opt in for it because if you opt in for Facebook music monetization, people will actually be able to again use your music in their content. But even little things like on Instagram Stories. Um They can add the music sticker and search the library for your songs. Many artists, many indie artists that I work with so many of them, their songs aren't available on there and I'm really, really pushing them to make sure that they opt in for this stuff. If you do work with a record label management company, please please push them um to do this because a fan being able to add your music directly onto an Instagram story can make a massive difference, not just for the exposure of your, of your music, but for you making money on the platform going forward. So anyway, that's a summary of um publishing admin companies and why they're useful and a couple of things like, you know, youtube and Facebook monetization, which you should be opting in for. Thank you for watching and I'll see you in the next video.
