Hi. In this video, I just want to recommend to you uh some resources that can really, really help you uh with your music career. Now, the music business is very, very, very complex. You know, there's so many different parts to it. And if you want to be successful in a particular industry, you gotta know how it works. Really, you know, if you don't know how it works, then, you know, you can't possibly hope to succeed. It's like a doctor not understanding medicine. You know, they can't be a very good doctor unless they understand uh medicine. So got a couple of books here. Um These ones I take these basically everywhere that I go, which kind of sounds weird and obsessive, but they are that good. This one here is all you need to know about the music business written by uh Donald S Passman. The edition I've got here is the eighth edition. Um But make sure you get the latest edition and to be honest, it's a comprehensive guide on, you know how the industry works. Basically, it's definitely ...
more on the technical side and it's kind of more about how things work historically especially about record deals, record business, um royalty, songwriting and publishing, um touring, motion picture music loads of different things. And it's one of those books where it's good to have because every so often I'll be like, how does that work again? And then I just dive in and find the answer to the question in this, in this book. Another one that I highly recommend, especially for uh independent music artists uh these days is how to make it in the new music business, practical tips on building a following. And a and making a living as a musician written by Ari Hestand. Ari Hsan is a musician himself and he's done a very good job at building a career as a musician in the new music business. And this book is just full of practical tips that are more relevant to building fan bases online and, and, and stuff like that. Uh I find I dive into this book quite often, especially when I'm working with artists. Uh just to remind them of certain things and to remind myself of, you know, the, the different ways that you can build fans online these days and different income streams that are available to you. I'll just give you an idea of some of the content that's on here. Some of the things overlap with the other one how royalties work and copyright and stuff like that. Um But some of these things are more specific about like releasing music, um like what a release strategy might look like. Uh There's a chapter here called building a fan base one fan at a time, which I'm very, very keen on and playing live booking and promotion. One of them is how to master the internet, which is obviously very good to know if you can master the internet and you know, like I said, uh royalties and stuff like that. So I highly recommend um these books, I also recommend Ari's blog, which is called R ES Take. It's an up to date um blog, especially on things like digital uh service providers and stuff like that. He has an up to date article about the differences between them and the pros and cons of using each one. So I definitely recommend that you go to R ES take.com and just follow A E hurst down cos uh he's a good person to follow, especially on like Twitter and Facebook. He's always making videos and stuff like that, which are very useful um for people like you and me anyway, hope that's useful and I'll see you in the next video.
