Facing Pages
we're going to show you facing page master pages a little bit different from what we've done here. But the same concept with using master pages we're gonna do is started new document. And in the new document window, I'm gonna create a facing pages document and I'll add some pages in here right now. Facing page is the key to what we're doing right here. So facing pages when we're doing a book layout that's going to be bound, we are going to have pages that air literally facing each other and my pages panel that is reflected there with the facing pages. And I see my spying running down the middle of my document thumbnails. Right hand page is always the first page. Left hand page is always the last page. Some people don't particularly like this because they want their first in their last page together. Well, that's nice, but when you're doing facing pages, it really is the first page of the document, really is the first page in the last page really is the last page. So one thing that you'...
ll notice here in the Facing Pages Master Page section is that we have to master pages right here on the double. Click on that. And technically, this is not to master pages. This is a single master page that has a left and a right hand side. It isn't uncommon for people to you start to use this. They forget that master pages are facing pages, has checked in the new document dialog box. They get in here and they say, Well, my pages or staggered kind of funny. Yeah, they are. But again, the master page like, Oh, there's two pages here. I can put anything where I want to and the answer is sure you can So course will go in and they'll put in their automatic page number something like this, and let me go in and put something in here so they may go in And they said a few options here on the pages and they've got their documents set up and they begin to put items on the master page and they put in their text container and such. And they've got elements ready to go. Everything's ready and they go to the first page of that document, a double click on, and they're just like, Oh, there's nothing there. Let me go back to my master page here, and it's like, Yep, I put that element There Sure did. Yep. Film a text container with blue. Then just to make sure there it is and they go back to the first page and they're like, You can see it's not working. I put it on the master page and it's not showing on my page and my document, and they keep doing it over and over again. They really get frustrated, and they're like, It's just not working. Why is it not working? And the reality of it is, is that because we have facing pages, we have two sides of our master page, the left side of our master page and the right side of our master page. Therefore, when we go into our document, what's the first page in our document? A right hand page. If I put nothing on the right hand side of my master page, I get nothing on the entire right hand side of my document, and so logically you would think that you could go and grab a master page from here and drag it right on your page. You certainly can, however, done from the different side of the tracks. Sorry, can't go across the tracks. So left hand side of the master page will only show up in the left hand side of the document. Only I can't drag the right hand side, left hand side of the master page onto the right hand side. It's not gonna do anything. The reason why we're using facing page master pages is so we can create symmetry in our books. A lot of technical documents, books that we learned for education. They're gonna have that symmetrical layout on. It isn't uncommon where we'll have a headline here Probably spelled that incorrectly. I didn't lucky, mean, and again, I can now lay this out so I can see both sides of the page. This wouldn't make sense to lay it out in a single page document because I would have to create a left hand master page. Then I could create a right hand master page based on my left hand master page. I would never be able to see the two at once when I'm using facing pages, I can go in here and I can duplicate those items and I can get basically mirror images off these. So if I would like to do that, it's very easy to use my copy and paste in place or use my option. Click and drag and I can apply those elements so they can see them in mirror image to each other. So if I want to create an automatic page number, their shift option command and is my automatic page number and I'm going Teoh, choose my flaunt that I have right here. There is my favorite right there, Avenir. Well, it's not my favorite, but it's my new favorite right now. I can put my page number over on this side and then, of course, copy it so that it goes over to this side of my document and I now have facing pages. They're the same. I was able to lay it all out, See it all on one spread and again, technically, this is a master page. We just have a left in the right hand side. And when I go into my document here, right hand side of my document gets the right hand side applied left hand side of my document gets left hand side applied. Now when people start up documents because facing pages is checked automatically when they create their document, we have the issue off starting of a document I've got facing pages. I quit in eight pages, and it's like I didn't want it laid out this way. Can I break this apart and answers? Yes, you can. We do that under the dog file menu. Under the documents set up, we can go be in and we can simply turn off are facing pages. Turning off the facing pages will then break everything down into single pages right there. But do you notice how the master pages stay? Two pages started Office. The Facing page document. I go into my master pages because it started off his facing pages. That's the only thing that didn't change. So what can I dio? It's pretty easy. I can actually go into the master page document here, Click on one of those extra wings of the master page. Just drag it right to the trash can of my pages panel, and then I'm back down to ones single master page. So whatever I put on here, then I will have that in my document right there when you are dealing with a facing page document where you have content in here and you go and you decide afterwards, you started as a facing page, and you decide now that you want to break this apart after you format it. All of your items here, a couple things that you have to pay very close attention to. So there's my set up. Insert a few more pages here for more, by the way, when you are inserting pages or when you are creating a document with facing pages, because this is going to be bound. In order to have this book work properly, you have to have the number of pages equally divisible by four. If I have 37 pages, 37 pages doesn't work. 36 40 44. The number of pages has to be equally divisible by four, or else when you try to print this book is an actual booklet. It's going to have to insert blank pages, so keep that in mind. You never find a 37 page book. So when you're using facing pages always put these together and multiples of four for 8 12 16 whatever it may be. So with this I've set up my document. I've got multiple pages in here and then I decide later on after I format all my content go back under my documents set up here and I'm going to turn off my facing pages Now I turn off my facing pages. Do you see what happened? It went back two facing pages and it said OK, it now has to favour one side of my master page. And it has It has taken the left side of my master page and it has now decided, OK, you switch this back to you facing pages from our single pages back from facing pages. Now your whole document has changed and you're just like, Oh my gosh, I spent all that time I set it up with facing pages And you know what? Go ideo. So when you go in and you want to break these apart, what I'm going to do is I'm going Teoh, turn off my allow document pages and I allow my spreads to shuffle. OK, and here's kind of a crazy part right here. Remember when we try to move everything around, we had to turn those off so they could all move around. When I turn those off and I decide to turn off my facing pages, it tells you Oh, okay. Since you've gone in and turn off here, allow document paises a shuffle I see that you've had facing pages. These pages were together as spreads. But if you're gonna go and turn them off, we're just gonna turn them off and you're just gonna get the whole left. Send outside of your document where your master pages were applied. But then it says, 01 of more. The spreads are set to keep their pages together because I turned off the allowed document pages. A shuffle, That's what shuffle kind of means. Are they gonna break apart? I don't buy the terminology. It doesn't make sense. But anyway, so do you want to maintain the current number of pages on the spreads? And I say yes it, Then we'll break it out so that I do not lose my formatting. I have a left in the right hand side, but I have to set up those parameters in the pages panel to make sure that the shuffling or whatever they want to call it doesn't occur so that they actually stay together as spreads. That's very important to know and understand. Or rails. You can go off the rails just like that. If you just say, Oh, turn off my facing pages then all of a sudden you got half your document. All your content will be there, but you'll only get the left hand side of your master page very important to know and understand any spread that you have together and facing pages, which is virtually every set in your document or going to remain that way in your pages panel so that you have those. And then, of course, your first in your last page will be single pages. And then for those of you that have to have that last page up next to the first page now, you could actually drag that last page up to your first page. And life can be so good because so many people, like can't stand having that single page there for the front cover. Well, that's how it works, OK, so I can use that feature where I turn the facing pages off. You just have to know the consequences of what's going to happen. Be prepared for that so that you don't go down the wrong path and find out that after all that work, you don't know how to get back. Thank goodness for Command Z, because it works awesome. And it works awesome here too. So I'm right back to my real facing pages in my document right there. So big difference between single pages and facing pages and how you lay it out. Yes, you can switch back and forth between the two, but it's really good to know what it is you're going to be doing and using this for when you start your document. A little planning ahead will make a big difference in the end. Because if you get everything in here and you do something and everything goes awry, you may not be able to get it back very easily. So plan ahead facing pages, we're gonna be doing books, publications. If you just want single pages, you're gonna print it out on your printer here or take it off to some little quick print print plate. Place single pages work just fine

So happy to be able to watch and buy a class from Jason Hoppe!! I absolutely love his classes and have learned so much from him. I have inDesign and am saving up to buy all of his classes, just wish he had one on Dreamweaver! I appreciate the videos put into smaller segments so I can watch whenever I can fit in a few minutes. He is funny, smart and knows so much about the programs and makes them easy to understand. I plan on telling my other graphic students about his classes because they are that good!! Thanks a bunch Jason for doing these....

I bought this course sometime back but only just had the chance to do it. I'm amazed at the amount I've leant and how much information was packed into this course. I've taken various Indesign courses through an online school but I have to say I got more out of this three day course than I did in a three month one! Jason's explanations were easy to follow, his expertise is very impressive and his teaching manner is interactive and fun. This is one course I'm glad I bought so that I can keep going back for easy reference....which I know I will!
