Enhancing Your Instagram® Videos
the 3rd 1 which I'm really excited about is, um this is the first time I've ever done this app in video hands. And I'm excited because Ben is coming back then long from word swag is coming back to show us their latest app that they developed, which is a video app. So I love using this, and it is easier, in my opinion, to use this than pick pay post again. It's the outfit for my instagram course on creativelive. Instead, Gal, I've June 9th to the 11th fit number three, which is your favorite. So I did the same video on purpose. I like that. You can see my whole outfit. It's not. The signs aren't cut out. And I love how you can enhance and really make the video sparkle. Um, I just touched on what you could do with this. This is the 1st 1 I did. I played with it a little bit last week, but I'm just so excited that we have the expert with us again. Ben is back for more, but before we introduce Ben, I just want to say to everyone out there I am so impressed with how many words, swags, image...
s I have seen and I love that. I have heard people thanking me for showing them this new app and what it's done for their business. So many people have said this makes doing instagram so much easier. I now have a nap. I have a tool and I just gives me so much pleasure that he's part of this show and sharing us and that he's gonna actually give us a demonstration. He's gonna talk us through this app and how you all can use it right here today. So let's welcome bend back to the stage so that he can share how to use video. Ben, take it away. I have a few slides for you guys. I'm so excited to be back here with you. Thanks for letting me share our new app with you. Do you have the other power point for the the video? So the big question is why videos videos were introduced by Instagram about a year ago. I believe in October or September of 2013 is when they allowed you the ability to up a blood your own videos that were taken from outside of Instagram. So That was a big step board. But this is something I dealt with when Instagram first allowed videos was like, When would I do videos? Is a reason for me to do videos. Um, why would I? Why would I do video so going on to our next slide? More than photos, videos can take your viewers into your band's world. In other words, videos give your band life videos, allowed your audience to know you better and create a stronger emotional connection with you and the more connected your audiences with you, the more likely they are to trust you and this engage work with and buy from you. So videos are a great format to really engage and connect with your audience. So let's talk about my top three opportunities for video, and I think this is definitely a challenge When you're new to making videos is like what I use to make a video. What would my content be? So here are my three suggestions for top three opportunities to use video on instagram, so the first opportunity is to make a moving image, with or without music. So one example is you could take a picture of something. But if you actually took video of it would be that much more interesting and alive. So imagine for a second we're sitting by the pool and we have our feet sitting up on a lounge chair and we're just relaxing, so you could definitely take a picture of that. I've just your feet and the pool in the background. That'd be really nice picture, but which you could do is you could actually take video of that. And then you get the same picture, composition and beauty, but you get the glimmer of the pool in the background. So now your photo has been enhanced. Um, as a video, Another thing you can do is you can take, for example, quote or an image, and you can pretty much keep it as an image, but add some motion and energy to it and at some music. So in that case you get the visual of the quote, which would just be like an image. But you also get the added richness of music and the motion added to the quotes, you kind of get the boast best of both worlds now show an example that later and talk a little bit about how that could be a good strategy to use for static images. So Opportunity number two is showing a behind the scenes of a project, a photo shoot or product being made. So this is a great way to bring your audience into your old Let's say you have a product, maybe your jewelry maker. You can show what goes into that process of making that jewelry, you know, is that handcrafted? Is it what type of materials that's really gonna allow your audience to get it behind the scenes insider look of what it takes for you to deliver that product. If you don't have a product, maybe you're working on a project. You can show the people involved in that project all these people that are putting their energy for to make, like a really great project or, uh, whatever you're making for your audience. Number three is location and travel videos. So if you ever get the opportunity to travel somewhere for your business or just personal, people love love scene where you're where you're at in the world and explore new places and just basically living vicariously through your feet. I know I love. Any time I see one of my friends go to a really cool location that I've never been to, So I think that's always a great way to just engage with your audience. So this is something I actually went through. When I started first posting videos on Instagram and I was really excited, I'd put a lot of effort and energy into my video. I was excited. I uploaded it, and then, oh, my videos weren't getting as much engagement as my photos. And this was definitely a setback, because sometimes I'd be putting more energy into these videos versus my photos. But it just didn't seem like it was resonating with people as much as my photos. So I wanted to share with you all. Some best practices were video that can help avoid this pitfall and get people to watch your video and also engage more with your video. So this is also known as how to ensure your video gets seen. So the first best practice is to select a great cover image. So if you've ever uploaded a video to Instagram, one of the options are. One of the steps is to select your cover image for that video. So that's gonna be what people see first when they're scrolling through their feed. And so it's really important to spend a little bit of time on that and make it interesting and compelling, and in a worst case scenario, they might not even watch your video. But if your cover image looks great and it looks great just as a photo, then they're still gonna like it, and then they're more likely to read it and engage in the comments. So that's the first tip. The second back, best practices to have something interesting happened right away. So I don't know if you have ever had this experience, but you're scrolling through your feet. One of your friends post the video, and so you're like, Hey, I watch this and then you start watching it and it's It's a darkly lit room. There's nothing happening. There's not really any audio, and you're just like, what is this video bow? And you give it 5 10 seconds and you're like, You know, I gotta move on. So definitely try to make something happen interesting right away in your video, there's two ways you can do that. You can just literally start shooting your camera right when action is about to happen. Or you can use instagram or another app to just edit out all that ah, flesh in the beginning that you don't need so third best practices to have a compelling description with photos. I think it's a little bit different because photos. Sometimes you look at the photo first, and then you'll read the text and the text at acts as a closer to the photo. But I think video it's a little bit different. Lots of times people will read your description and then use that to decide whether they want to watch your video or not. So, having a compelling description that's gonna motivate them. Tow Watch Your video is a really good idea, and number four is to make your videos look great. Have the same standard for your videos as you do for your photos. So I think this is really common. Lots of times, people will definitely spend the time to make a great photo. They'll pay attention to the composition, the lighting, the colors in the photo, but with video, they're just kind of like A. I don't know if it's like the America's Funniest Videos thing, but people just tend to get a little sloppier and laser with videos. But if you can put the same energy you put into your videos, as you do with your photos, that's going to definitely get you more eyeballs and make people more inclined. Toe check out your video So that was actually the inspiration for an app we recently built and recently watch. I'm really excited to be here and share with you guys because it just came out a few weeks ago, and it's actually this week featured as a best new photo and video app in the APP store. Thank you. Thanks so much. Uh, so the philosophy and the inspiration we want behind video Hansen Why we wanted to build it is because we believe that video should look as beautiful of your photos. There's a lot of photo ops that allow you toe manipulate and really control the look of your photo. But there weren't a lot of video APs that allowed you to do the same. They sort of just came with preset filters and everything that I would definitely give you a look to video but didn't open up that control To really make your video look beautiful, I'm gonna have to tutorials for you all today. The 1st 1 is going to be creating a moving image with music that we talked about earlier. And then I'm gonna edit a behind the scenes promotional video and the moving image with music. I think I'll show you guys what that looks like, but I think this is a really good strategy to get that engagement on Instagram. So this is the home screen of the APP. The first option we have is to pick a project size to get started. Since again, we're doing this for Instagram. I'm gonna go ahead and select the one by one button. I can record a new video or I can select for my camera roll. I'm gonna go ahead and select from my camera roll and select an image. So here we have a quote. This is something that you could post just as image. But we're going to see what we can do to enhance this quote and make it more robust in interesting. So the first thing I'm gonna do on the screen is I'm going to select the length I want this photo to be. Since Instagram allows me to have 15 seconds, I'm just gonna go ahead and drag with slider to the right, and I don't need 15 seconds. I'm just gonna leave it around 10 seconds. I think that's a good length. That's going to basically allow us set how long this this image video plays for. I'm gonna top the check mark in the upper right corner. That's gonna put it onto my main screen here. And so if I just want to get up and running really quickly, there's probably two things that would do toe make this photo richer and more enhanced. I'm gonna go ahead and select the overlays tab here. I'm going to select light leaks, so overlays just to back up a little bit overlays allow you to play textures and overlays to your image, whether it's video or image. I really, really, really love the way light leaks look. And that term might not be familiar with you, but I'll go ahead and select it so you can see what that looks like. So I'm gonna select when I select this first late leak here burn and you can see that adds this beautiful glowy effect. Almost like you're looking through an old vintage camera or you're looking through some flames, I think works really nicely with the sunset. So the next thing I'm going to go ahead and do is I'm gonna add some audio to this to give our viewers Ah, little bit of a richer experience. So when I select the audio tab, I'm gonna tap select music that button right there and let's go ahead and select her song. This song is from ben sound dot com. And so we get this screen. This screen is sort of similar to the screen we saw earlier this convey sickly Ah, let us set when we want the music to start and finish. But I'm just fine with his music. Starting at the very beginning of the the video clips, I'm not even gonna touch anything. I'm just gonna tap the check mark in the right hand corner, and normally you would see the album cover for whatever song you would have here. So when this happened, the check mark on the upper right corner, it's gonna go ahead and import that whole truck for me. Now I'm gonna hit play so you can see we have the quote. But we also have a richer experience with the added motion of the light leak and the audio. So I'm done with that. I'm gonna hit done in the upper right corner. That's gonna go ahead and export it. And while it's exporting, I'm gonna talk a little bit about why this is a good practice to do, I think because when you post this, people will see your quote as an image. So you're going to get that engagement of people. Just simply view it as an image. But for people that happen to stay and look at the image a little bit longer, they're gonna get them or richer experience of the light leak motion and audio, which is just gonna be a bomb or emotional experience in a richer experience for the audience. So So once you're done with this, of course you can see it. Save it to your camera roll shared on instagram Facebook. What's up? All the use of social media platforms. So for the next tutorial, I'm gonna go into a little bit more depth and at it, a promotional video for you guys before you move on. I just like to know your thought Process on the royalty free music first, is this music we have in our ITunes library? Yeah. I mean, I'm not a lawyer. I don't really know what is necessarily possible lead from a legal standpoint. I mean, I know it's really common on Instagram to have people would just use popular music. Um, that's commercial on again. I don't know if it's because they're not risk necessarily using it for commercial purposes and everything, but I would say most people, from what I've seen, they do tend to just use, like, popular music for the audio. So I'm gonna start again and select one by one project for Instagram. I'm gonna select from camera roll and select my first clip. So this clip this video is going to be a behind the scenes promotional video for a fashion label. So when it's like my first clip here, So this is a really common issue is the video that was originally shot was shot in widescreen format. But since we're delivering for instagram, we need to crop that video for one by one format. So this screen gives me the option to set where I wanna crop it. So I think that looks nice. And I know in this clip there is a point where the model smiles. So I think I'll be really nice to start the clip right before she smiles. So right about there. So you can see on the bottom, there's a few buttons that allow me to set my beginning and end of the clip. So I want to start the clip right here. I'm gonna press the start button in the lower left corner. So that's going to start the clip right there. And I'm gonna hit the play button. Let's send the clip right about there. I think that's a good place. So I'm gonna top the end, but in on the bottom, right. If I want a preview how this looks, I can tap the preview button in the middle. Okay, so that looks good. I'm gonna go ahead and hit the check mark on the upper right. So now I'm gonna go ahead, and before I move on, I'm going to select the audio tab and move this clip volume all the way down because we don't need the sound of the shooting, the camera shooting in the background. So I'm just gonna move that down. I'm gonna go ahead and quickly import my other clips now going to select my trimming Our Sorry, my crop area Right there. Since it's a 16 by nine. Video going down to one by one. Go ahead and import that. Move the audio down for that clip, Select my next clip. So, like my crop area, go ahead and import that. And I know I'm moving a little bit faster, but there are detailed instructions on how to do this step by step in the pdf tutorial for video hands. So this is my last clip, and I think that is a good crop area. Go ahead and hit the check. Mark, make sure you turn my audio down for these clips. Okay, so we have multiple clips in the timeline, and I actually actually just accidentally dragged this clip. But the really fun thing to do is set your order of clips, this clip off of my memory. I think she tosses here, and I think that's a really energetic clip. It's a great way, I think, to start the video kind of goes into our earlier best practice of having the video clip start as exciting as it is an end and energetic as we can. So I'm gonna take this clip and drag it to the very left there. So that's gonna be the first clip that plays in this video. So as I look at his clips, there's one thing that stands out to me, and it's that this clip is a little bit colder than the other clips like if you look at this first clip as a warm golden tone. But this clip has a bluish cold tone, and so the clips feel a little bit different. I'd really like to make the match up. So if I was really feeling energetic, I could actually go into my color tab here and top tune, and I'm given this option called White Balance. If you're familiar with that, um, on the IPhone, like your camera has a white balance option. Also, video cameras really common option. It just kind of basically determines how warm or cold your picture is. So if I was feeling ambitious, I could go in here, and I could adjust that and match it to the other clips. But I'm not feeling that quite that ambitious this time around. So a really good trick, actually, to make all your clips that match up, Let's say you're on a trip and you took Let's say you're going to on vacation and you have a picture by the pool when you have a picture of your hotel and maybe a picture in a restaurant, all these places might have different lighting. So a really, really great trick to just make him all match up and feel the same is to go ahead and make him look black and white. So I'm gonna go ahead and select this clip, select the presets button and make it black and white, and I'm going to do the same for the other clips. So now you could see when we look through our clips, they all really match up now because they're black and white. Now, when I look at this clip, one thing stands out to me, and it's a little bit darker than the other clips lighting wise. So I'm going to go ahead and just tune that really quick when a tap on the color tab tap tune. And I have this brightness option so I can control the brightness there. And I could also preview that while it's playing. So I'm gonna just go ahead and that just that until it looks right. So I think that looks a lot better that bright enough, the clip a lot more. So I think we're looking pretty good. The last thing I want to do is again apply my favorite overlay, which is the light leak. So let's go ahead and apply light leaks to these clips. Cool. So I'm really liking the way that looks. The last thing I want to do is I want to add a title to this video. So I'm gonna go ahead and at a clip I'm gonna select from my camera roll, and I'm gonna select a title graphic I made earlier. I'm gonna go ahead and set this to two seconds long, so I topped the two seconds button on the bottom because I don't want my title card to be overly long, but I want it to be long enough where people can read it. I'm gonna go ahead and hit the check mark, but in to import that and I'm gonna move this title card to the very beginning of my video and this title card, it's a little bit boring again. We had talked about earlier best practices. You want toe, make the video interesting right away. So I think this title card could use a little, a little bit of motion. So I'm gonna go into this edit tab right here. There's option. They're called photo motion. It's a button on the left. I'm going to go ahead and select the slider on the bottom and slide it to the right. I don't know if you could read that text, but that's gonna go ahead and zoom in this title card while it plays. And let's go ahead and add a lightly to and see how that looks. So now you can see it's a lot more interesting than just having a blink title card that's not moving or doing anything. So the last thing to do is just to check in and see how this video is all coming together. Oh, I'm sorry. Actually, I forgot to add out of audio, so I'm gonna top the audio but in here select my music and select Hebei one. Ito's Go ahead and import that I just use the default option because I want that music's that play from the very beginning. And the last thing for me to do is tap this button on the bottom, right. It looks like a little repeating recycling icon right now that just makes my clips play over and over. But if I tap that, that's just gonna play through all my clip so I can see it as one whole video. So let's go ahead and hit play I e. You're so cool. Um, so I'm gonna go ahead and had done in the upper right corner that's going to go ahead and export. That is gonna do while it's thinking and processing. Make that into video. So after the screen that oh, that will be it. And once we're done with this video, we can save it. Our camera RL shared on instagram do whatever we like with it. We have a couple of questions if we can just shoot real quick back and forth. Insta guy wants to know. Are there transition options that we don't have transition options right now, but that's something we're working on. Great. We have a lot of things planned for this. Offset. Did you make these title cards inward? Swag? Is there anything that you're importing from word swag into this? Yeah. Yeah, that title card was actually made. Okay, Inward swag. So supper wants to know. Can we add an end page with our website address at the end of the video where it will end and stay with that particular frame? Yeah, well, I think an instagram when your videos finished off the top of my head, I believe it goes back to the cover image. So that's one thing you can do is you can select your cover image as your last frame with your website address. So by default, that's going to end with that. But that also means it's going to start with that before the video plays as well. Maybe another ideas actually put it. Perhaps at the bottom of maybe this summer, 2014 photo shoot. And then you could put your your Allen there or the beginning and end as well. So one more question before we bring Soo back up this one's from the time capsule. We're talking about the music and having the rights to the music. Is there a way to credit the music source? Sort of in the comments of your post or something that could put in the video to give credit? Yeah, You could make a title card with the the music source, but it's probably even easier just to go ahead and make it in the comments of the post. Okay, Well, that's excellent. Yeah, Thank you so much. That was amazing. That was worth the price of the course right there. I like I am watching you and thinking Oh, I have so much more I can learn. Um, we wanted to stay here. Yeah, I'm just so impressed with you. The AP video hands words like I wanted Teoh show everyone. That video is actually on your instagram Teoh. So I'm gonna play it right now. And he's at 4 99 in terms of how many followers and I want to see him bumped up Teoh like 1000. They have a page video. Hance, I want you all to go there and start following him there. You'll get a lot of video inspiration. I was looking through it while he gave the demonstration. And I wanted to let you guys see this in action. It's the third. It's the third upload on their on their feed right now. So again, there at 4 99 they've only had 23 posts. So that's a great conversion on day. Have their bit Lee right there to get the app. You know, the call to actions right there. So a plus on the bio band you got, you got you down. But here's the video he just said, I want you guys to That Looks like a professional photo shoot to may. That is amazing. Right now there are 29 likes on that video. I would like anyone that is watching this to go into video hands and to comment. Let then know what you think of this and to use the hashtag instigate alive so we can see it in the feet as well. I am just so impressed with this app. This is awesome. Thank you. Yeah, really great
