On Set - Getting Work in a Competitive Environment

depending on where you are, you're gonna have other photographers that you're competing with. Um it's not necessarily like very competitive depending on where you live now. I'm based in L. A. So there are tons of photographers. Um The big thing is that your specific to the person you are. So your style is different than anyone else. So you want to play to that my style of shooting along with the way interact with people is gonna what's separating me from other people. Um With head shots and with modeling, it's a really big deal that you can make them feel comfortable. You can have different ways of interacting with your clients. Um And that's kind of what separates you from the base setting. Once you get into it is offering your product, what products are you offering that are different from other people already. My style is different than anyone else. Like anyone else's style is different. There are similarities because headshots are looking for a very specific thing. But what I offer...

when people come and shoot is that I do one bright sort of full light headshot set up in like the typical commercial way. And then because usually the stages I rent I can shut the light out, I have a set up with one single light in the corner where I can block everything out and have a single spotlight. So that creates a different mood dynamic look for people. And that I think is kind of nice that I can offer that real quick and I can set it up and tear it down. It doesn't take too much more time and it kind of helps the diversity in what I'm shooting. One thing that I did was looked at other photographers in my area to see what they were doing. Um And I tried to find a way to, you know, make myself look a little different. Um Again, it's all different with headshots in L. A. With photographers because they do need a specific look. Um But you know, everyone has their own style and price point. So being able to differentiate yourself in price and in style but still maintain the sort of world that they need as far as photography goes is kind of the key. It's a balance and it's really hard to kind of grasp and get ahold of, but practicing and shooting for free is a really good way to start doing that. Something that helps me a lot is being able to conform to what my client needs. Um Today, our model came in with some headshots that she already have which are great and they work well. Um the good thing about actors in Hollywood is that they always need something different, right? For different roles and you have different looks. So based on what she already has, I'm going to tailor my shots to be different. So we're not overlapping with the other photographer. Um And the other shots are wonderful and great and that photographer is really good. Um And these are just gonna be a little different to help her get jobs in the future. Um So being able to sort of adapt and create things that aren't the same as what she already has is really great, especially for your business.
