Action - Run Suppliers Through The Supplier Scoring Rubric
in this video. We're going to run our suppliers through the supplier scoring rubric. You can download this supplier scoring rubric as an attachment to this video or as always find it in your resource packet. And the purpose of this rubric is very similar to our product criteria. It helps gives us an idea about how one supplier compares to another supplier. And it's important to note just like the product criteria that a score doesn't tell you everything. So just because one supplier has a higher score than the other doesn't necessarily mean it's better. But it does give us a good idea that the supplier with the higher score is more likely to be the type of supplier that we're looking for to get started. We're going to look at our supplier comparison sheet between the time that I recorded the last video and I started this video, I received a lot of answers to my questions that I sent suppliers. As you can see the sheet has been updated with that new information. And what we want to do a...
t this point is we want to filter out all the suppliers that we know we don't want to work with because there's no point running these suppliers through the scoring rubric. For example, if I look at this list, One of the suppliers that stands out to me is this one where the minimum cost per unit is $5.70 and we tried sending them a message and they still wouldn't go down And for me $5.70 is too high cost per unit. And so I'm not even going to consider ordering from the supplier and what I like to do is just paint the cells red to make it really obvious that I'm not going to use this supplier. The next one I know I'm not going to use is one that has a minimum order quantity of 1000 units and they're not going to budge and lower it for me. So I'll make that right as well. Same with this one here, 1000 units. Now this supplier still hasn't gotten back to me and it's been a couple of days. So I'm gonna mark them out. And then lastly, one thing to note here is I have the same supplier listed twice. And that's because they have two similar products and I would consider importing each of them. And for that reason I'm just gonna mark one of these as yellow just to give myself a little notification that I shouldn't run the same supplier through the rubric twice. And now that leaves us with 123456 possible suppliers. And actually before we start running all six of these through the rubric, I want to check out this product here Because the cost per unit is a dollar 13 which is very low, which makes me wonder is it the right product that we're looking for? I'm gonna open up internet browser and take a look now that we have our internet browser open. I'm gonna type in that link and let's just take a look at what this product is like. So this product is slightly different than the double dog leash that I was hoping to get with a very stiff handle. And for that reason, since we have so many other suppliers as options, I'm just going to mark the supplier out And that leaves us with five possible suppliers. So now I'm gonna run each of these five suppliers through our supplier scoring rubric. Now, I'm gonna start running this first supplier, king speed pet products through our supplier scoring rubric. And the first thing I'm gonna do is write the supplier name down here to keep ourselves organized and we'll start at the top. And the way the system works is very simple. Right here. We have a question in this case, what is the email response time? And then we have four possible answers. And let's say the supplier responds between zero and 12 hours. Then we would make a note that that's in the column of four points. And so we put a four here and we do this for each of these rows and at the end we total up all the points. And that's your supplier score for the first one email response time since we were messaging so many suppliers at once. I can't remember how the email response time was for this supplier in particular. But what we can do is go to Alibaba and look at when the messages were sent and received, we're gonna want to open up an internet browser and go to Alibaba dot com. Then click on my alibaba, head over to the message center and from here we want to look for that supplier name. So the supplier is Dongguan Qing speed Pet products. And lucky for us, that's the first one at the top. So I'm just gonna click on this and I'm gonna make a note at when these messages were sent and received Here. We can see that my initial message was sent on February six at 11:45 And a response was received on February eight at 1124 pm. That's over 48 hours response time. And if we look at our column that would fall under column to supply response between 24 and 72 hours, I'll give them two points. Next up is the quality of english and let's read the response and see what it looks like. The english is definitely understandable But it's not 100% regarding to your questions prices below Without custom brand logo and packing. I would give the supplier of three decent english some broken nerds but comprehensible. I would not say the understanding was perfectly but it's definitely pretty good. Next up is email quality supplier accurately responds to every part of your message. And to be honest, we haven't messaged with this supplier a lot yet, it's just really been one response. But as far as I can tell this is a very thorough response. And it gives us all the information we need. And for that reason I'll give them a four here and they do accept Paypal, which I saw on the sheet. So we'll give them a form with this kind of question. There aren't four options. It's either yes, they accept Paypal and they get four points or no, they don't accept it. And they get one point. Next up is the response rate on Alibaba. And to find this out, we wanna open up the product page that we have saved on our supplier comparison sheet. So I'm gonna switch over to our supplier comparison sheet, copy this link for their products and open that in our internet browser. And this will take us to that page that's selling the dog leash that we're looking for. And if we look at the right, we'll see they have response time and response rate. And in this case we're interested in response. Right? And that rate is 72.2%. If we take a look back at our supplier comparison sheet, We'll see that that leaves the supplier at column to between 60 and 75%. Next up is the supplier age and the longer supplier has been around the more trustworthy they are. And if we look up here, we can see that this company has been around for 11 years And on our sheet that gives it a score of four, we know the supplier has gold status because of this symbol here. So whenever you see this symbol, it means it's a gold supplier. That means it gets four here. The next question we have here is what type of supplier is this? Is it a manufacturer, the wholesaler, a middleman or retailer, And this is a little tricky to figure out because it's not gonna be clearly stated on their profile. However, we can get a few clues to determine what type of supplier this is and to find out these clues, we want to go to one of their product pages in this case for the double dog leash and then click on their company name here and this will take us to their company page a few clues about whether or not this is a manufacturer is. If it's the manufacturer itself, they probably don't sell a wide range of products. And that's because manufacturers work best on economies of scale and it makes much more financial sense for them to make one product in large quantities rather than to try and make a bunch of different products. But if we scroll down and we see a bunch of different pet products, then we can assume that this is either a wholesaler or a middleman that's because they're obtaining products from a bunch of different manufacturers and then they provide one stop where you can buy all these different types of products. And if we scroll down just by looking at these pictures, it becomes pretty clear that this is most likely a wholesaler or a middleman. And although it says business type manufacturer here, my guess is this is a wholesaler. And another reason why I think that is because it seems like they have a pretty built out sales team. And it was pretty clear when we contacted them that they and although it says business type manufacturer here, I think they are probably a wholesaler. And besides selling a wide range of pet products. Another clue that makes me think that is, it seems as if they have a built out sales team. And usually if you're dealing with the manufacturer directly, they don't have big sales teams. One clue that makes me think that this is a wholesaler and not a middleman is the price for this product is pretty competitive with the other suppliers out there. And typically what you get with middleman is someone that buys product and then sells it at a higher price without adding any real value. But because this supplier is offering a pretty competitive price for the double dog leash, I'm gonna go with my gut and say that this is a wholesaler. And that means they get three points. Next up, we're looking at the minimum order quantity and if we look at our sheet, we'll see that the minimum order quantity is 100. And for that reason we're stuck right between three and 4. So I'm just gonna put three and finally we want to look at the supplier verification and to find this, we want to go to their product listing page. Here we are at the double dog leash. And if we go to the product page on the right, we'll see the supplier assessment area and we have this symbol which is on site checked. Now, if you're unclear about what this symbol means, you can always click on it. It will give you the name that that symbol represents and also a description of what that means. If we go back to our supplier scoring rubric, We can see that on site check, gives it three points and now it's time to tally together all the points for our supplier. I'm gonna open up a calculator And here we do two plus 3. That gives this supplier a score of 32 points. And what we can do, once we've calculated that is, go to our supplier comparison sheet and make a note of the supplier to score 32 points. Now that we've calculated the Supplier score for this supplier, I'm gonna do the same for our other four suppliers. I finished calculating the scores for each supplier. Just as I showed you earlier and here's what I got the first four. All had a very similar score 32, 32, 33 and 32. When it came to the 5th supplier. It didn't perform as well as the other four suppliers. And the main reason why it's score was lower was because it does not accept paypal for the main order. It only accepts Paypal for the sample and that's a red flag for me. And since our other four suppliers scored really well, I'm just gonna immediately mark the supplier as red and say I'd rather not deal with it. If we can choose one of the better options. In this video, we ran our suppliers through the supplier scoring rubric. And in the next video, we're going to decide on two or three suppliers to order a sample from pause this video right now and don't move on until you've ran your suppliers through the supplier scoring rubric.
